Caravan freshen up

Postby Trainer4wd on Sat Nov 19, 2016 3:03 pm

Thought I would share my caravan project
The old checker plate was looking average so I decided to paint it
I finally decided on tub liner, it's a rubber paint that will help defend against stone chips. I did a test paint on some old checker plate and was really happy with texture. I could not scratch it with a screw driver no matter how hard I tried. Just need to finish the front

Looks bloody good mate, if ya don't mind me asking, did you spray it using the same needle in your spray gun or is there a certain tip required, cheers mate.

Schutz gun, used for underbody coatings and stoneguard which are very thick and a textured finish is either desirable or acceptable. They're quite cheap and don't have a needle - just work on venturi effect with a tube on the front to direct the spray.

Trainer4wd - looks good. Do you have enough coating thickness to absorb the hits it will take?

Yeah, I did the same on my van. Only issue was the offset. The van ran 0 offset rims, and the Triton ones are +35 (or something close to that). I got BSA to machine up some awesome spacers for me, out of a forged Aluminium billet.

Are you allowed to use spacers on trailers?

Your paint job looks smick trai'4x4, people will think you've updated the rig.

actually the darker color now makes it look like a more newer model as black is the go these days for checker plating

looks good and functional

You have done a good job there.
Not trying to steal your post but while we are talking about caravans, this is my current project which is a post war home built van which was found in a shed near Tarago NSW. Was a basket case. Mostly reclad and recovered with calico same as they did in those days. Interior was mostly gutted and rebuilt, nearly finished with a new axle going under this weekend.

Prior to aluminium caravans and before the sealants which we now have became available they had a problem waterproofing the plywood caravans. The solution was to cover the caravan with canvas or calico.
The method is to wash and iron the calico to remove any fluff and creases, working from one end and using a large roller apply a generous coat of undercoat to the wood, quickly lay the calico down while rolling another coat on top before it starts to dry..........do small strips about a roller width. What happens is that the paint seeps through the calico from both sides becoming one thick smooth coat. Allow to dry and apply the colour coat. The calico seems to shrink and become tight.
Believe me it sticks. I needed to lift a portion of the calico after a short while and it lifted the wood.
And a tip is to do it in the cool of the morning or late evening..........not in full sun or you will have problems.
Early fabric aircraft used this method and it is called `doping'
My van has been out uncovered in Canberra weather for 2 years and has not leaked.

That van is very similar to one an uncle of mine built many years ago for six of them to go on holidays in, it had double bunks in the back.

I eventually inherited it and had to two it from Merimbula to Churchill with the ole Rocky. Best item I've ever towed. He later built a smaller one with complete meranti interior, also a gem.

Nice job there koala.

Certainly sounds like you had to develop a new (old) skill for that resto. It's good to see that some arts are not being lost.

Ahhh, right you are. At first sight I thought that it was sitting in a hole in the concrete but I see your point. Aired down intentionally for greater contact patch area. ;)

Would you believe that the van had sat since 1962 on those tyres which had gone flat.
When I picked up the van I pumped them up and they held air. The other side tyre is still up after 2 years.
