If you remove the plastic liner on the inside of the rear wheel arch you'll find a couple of viable options to get into the back of the cab.

Installed the CB Uniden 400sx in the centre console, nice tight fit
used a Uniden AT470 6dB UHF High Gain Antenna with 4.5m coax ran in flex conduit mounted on nudge bar.
thanks all the reading here makes the decision a lot easier...
no drill holes, no pulling the front dash apart, uhf is stored away when not in use, mic is right next to driver.

Installing a CB

Postby MN GLXR on Wed May 04, 2011 6:35 pm

Dan

A relay is just a switch that allows high current to flow through it.

The switch is activated when power (current) is applied to it.

In the case of spotlights, the power from your highbeam wire activates the relay and connects the battery to the spotlights. When you go back to low beam, the relay switches off the spotlights.

Think of it as an automatic switch that only activates when triggered by another device.

Hi Guys,

Just read through this thread as I want to stick a UHF into my MN, but I have nowhere to put the freaking thing, and I don't want to screw it to the side of the console.

I have been thinking about a roof console, but that's more coin I don't want to spend. :(

Hey Mongrel,
Have you purchased one yet? I have been looking for one myself, i have settled with the GME TX 3440, it has all the controls on the Mic, so you wont see anything else. another option is one with a remote face. Uniden do one and so do GME. That way you are able to place the face under your ashtray and mount the body elsewhere. ie. under a seat.
Just a thought. Not sure what you have looked into.

These are a few of the many out there I have looked at myself!

If you are only going to run the UHF it will only draw a few amps. So just use the same size wire (or bigger) as the one that comes out of the back of the radio.

any of those i suggested though you can place the unit elsewhere. i am planning on either cable tying mine to under the driver seat/behind a dash panel preferably to the left of the drivers pedals. this allows you to only have the mic mounted within your reach. or possibly just plug it in when you go on trips and sit it in the cup holder as i know you dont want to properly mount anything in your cab!

The one with the buttons on the mic looks the goods. Stick it under the seat, and Bob's my Uncle! :)

awesome! think i pretty much have it covered, although with the relay i read one wire needs to be wired to "switched power" im going to assume i just tap into something that comes one when your accessories come on. ie. ciggie lighter?!

thanks

Alternatively some radios like the icom ic400pro switch themselves off after say 1 hr which protects the battery if you forget to switch off. No need for a relay just wire straight to battery.

Just purchased myself the GME TX-3440 off prestigenet.com.au
http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php ... ts_id=1537
was $422 with the fiberglass antenna. Personally i like the look of the fiberglass as to the steel and from what i understand is a touch better.
Can't wait for the delivery! Going to cable tie it under the seat or behind the panel next to the cig tray!

For most of us it won't matter, but putting electrical gear under the seat isnt a good idea if you cross deep water and happen to take on water :D

Re: Installing a CB

Hmmm didn't realise I had created an issue with my cable route.

But for an update.

About 2 weeks after i posted this, i did infact install a fuse at the battery end of the + cable. So effectively having 2 fuses 1 at each end.

Now well over a year after install, I can safely say that my placement hasn't been an issue at all. I did keep an close eye on the cable over that time, and made specific check on the spot thru the door where the door seal was up against the cable proper. It seems that at that specific spot and a fair bit above and below it.. the door seal has almost no pressure on the car body let alone the CB cable. So no wear or worn marks at all.

Another area that was suspect, was the hole where the cable actually came thru the guard to the battery. Wear and tear as well as gravity and car movement etc can often rub the cable thru to the actual copper. Happy to report no such wear has shown, infact no rubbing seems to be happening at all as yet.

The placement of the radio proper under the seat held by cable ties also has been a winner, the radio hasn't moved at all from the spot i cable tied it too at the beginning of 2010.

I live in the Lockyer Valley of QLD in a town called Laidley, so my install had a very hard work out in seriously wet conditions earlier in the year and came thru with flying colours.

So i can safely say, whilst my install cable route may have been sus, but was used for a specific reason, it works and works well even under EXTREME wet conditions :)

I think the main proviso is that good quality heavy duty power cable, as far as is practicable for your personal install is the key.

So did you end up getting a cb yet mongrel :?:

I got the TX3100 as it is such a tiny unit and mounted it where the rear window/ciggie lighter is. I'm still able to get to these and when time comes to sell you won't see the mounting holes :P . I put the mike just above my knee and so far very happy with it
