Salt's V6 ML

Postby salt36 on Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:13 pm

Well, Finally some progress with my build up.

I want a vehicle that I can take the family camping and not be afraid to take it 'off road' , However the standard setup is not quite up to scratch so I would think I will need;

Bullbar for protection ( Kangaroos etc)
Towbar and rear protection ( because I tend to reverse by feel )
Better lights (spotties)
UHF
Snorkel ( for dust mostly and cooler air for the engine)
Better suspension (for obvious reasons, thanks Brendan) :D
Dual batteries ( for fridge, lights etc)

OK so thats the list, now lets build it 8-)

First and probably most important.......

Next one to arrive is the ARB rear bar/towbar

Well everything has its problems and this one was no different
The bar..........

Look what the LPG fitter did to my exhaust :!: HMMMMM damn now I will need a new exhaust

NOT much room under there with that bloody great gas tank better make sure its all going to fit..........

All looks good and will fit, so proceeding to the chassis and the bracket with all the cage nuts, Damn it wont go in..... :o
The mounts for the gas tank have a huge washer inside the chassis rail stopping the bracket sliding in....... And not just one, but one either side

The offending washer.....

Aaah we can fix that  , pity I cant cut straight

OK
All the hiccups are dealt with I decided to abandon the instructions to drill the second hole in the chassis rail and used the opposite side bracket as a template for the second hole. My reasoning was that the slot in the rear bar mount was near an inch long and it would be guess work whether the hole would line up with the caged nut in the chassis rail bracket.....

With all problems solved It all fits and is all good :D :D :D

Plenty of room between the gas tank mounts and the bar, I was a bit worried they might have been to close. It is a bit hard to see but has about 50mm clearance.....

Mate........it'll be a brand new truck by the time all that gear goes in. Looks good so far!! Its so exciting doing all the big purchases and install all at once..........it leaves you a little empty afterwards while your scratching for things to modify.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

Thanks guys,

Well got suspension fitted today, no photos as yet was dark when i picked it up. The front felt quite stiff and when I got home I looked and the front is sitting on the bump stops, have no bullbar as yet, maybe that will make a difference.......

Anyway fitted snorkel on Sunday, reasonably straight forward so I decided to cut the holes with a metal blade in the jig saw........

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Not too bad, however the inner guard was a different story, I used several cuts with a small hole saw and cut between them where I could with the jig saw and the rest I used a combination of die grinder, hacksaw blade(no handle) and chainsaw file, the file was most effective but still took a looooong time
Got there in the end and all fitted up, I notice the round tin radiator water bottle has been replaced with this plastic one..........

I decided to wash the Ute today, after driving to work and home again in the rain this morning. No work today :D it is too wet so called into Pedders man on the way home, he said he had time to fit suspension so washed it underneath for courtesy more than anything, I dont like being under a wet muddy car.

Took some pics when home before the suspension, it was a bit dark, you know raining and miserable  ......

Thanks Tassie

The snorkel is a Safari from ARB, ML/MN Diesel the part numbers are now the same and the air box is in the same spot for the motors including the V6 ML.
Well the V6 has been discontinued in the MN replaced with a 2.4 turbo  cant see that almost keeping up with the SS Commodores

I like your Roo bar Tassie, I wanted one but Mits in Shepparton said they were discontinued.....
Never mind the ARB is pretty cool

No stopping you by the looks of it mate!

Did you test the seal on the snorkel by blocking the inlet to see if it chokes the motor...I've heard that's what they do?

Hey guys

Homer I didnt test the seal as yet, no doubt I would have an engine light for a day or so if I did...

Slim where is your water bottle ? Mate I am thinking around 100-150kgs after I get the bullbar....

Bought the winch today a King One (Avenger) from Kyabram Camping and 4wd (Jeffs Shed ) They are great people and cant do enough for you.

Suspension

What can I say :D :D :D

Brendan rang me this morning concerned the fronts were riding on the bump stops, after speaking with him we decided it was best to drive for a while and see what happens as the springs settle in. So I took off and headed for the roughest roads I know of. (One used to give me a sore back in my Ford one tonner). MEGA oversteer was actually fun as I could flick the rear end sideways whenever I felt like it
Arrived at Kyabram and had a wheel alignment done, bought winch, and headed home, WOW what a difference after the wheel aligment, this thing just glides over the worst bumps and potholes.. :D :D :D

Handling has improved no end, Ute holds a line through the rough stuff and has positive feel at all times through the steering wheel, an absolute pleasure to drive now. :D :D :D

The upper arm wishbone (whatever) now sits just above the bump stop and this will improve once the bullbar is on

Thanks To Brendan and The Ultimate Suspension

all looking good there Salt! Well done :!: :D

The ultimate suspension looks tops with the stock tyres. makes you realise how much it makes a difference over stock. (good to see that they follow up on everything - as always they really stand behind their product! cant help but really RESPECT that!)

i can see you're hesitating with trimming the flare to re-fit
Joe & co have done already ;) I am sure they are happy to share some tips

QLD'r, ARB bar it will be here in two weeks apparently, will cut the flare and put on then. Didn't see the point putting it on now only to take it off and cut it in a couple of weeks.

Yep will install myself with the winch and am going to try and modify the Mitsi fog lights to fit the bar.

I have always done work myself to my vehicles and it kind of goes against the grain to pay someone to do stuff I am capable of...... :D

Today I bought the wiring for the towbar, Mitsi wanted $330

Mate has the local Midland Mufflers and does towbars so asked him and $120 for the kit which plugs into Mitsi's wiring and runs one power wire to the battery.

Too easy the instructions he gave me said....plug the loom into the tail light plug at the rear chassis on left hand side.....ok it must be up there somewhere.....you guessed it right on top of that bloody gas tank
Well nothing is ever easy so better take the tank out, mind you it is half full
I didnt think I would be able to lift it myself and for sure it would roll off the jack so I made a rough holder....

The main reason I bought it as it will fit anywhere, not sure where it should go :?
SWMBO throws her handbag half on the centre console so that cancels out anywhere near there...
I looked at all the centre orifices :o but none seemed to grab my fancy
So I decide on the drivers side....at least I know I wont knock it around too much
