Sockets are the go :D

That is an Ultimate leaf, both sides pressed in fine. Time will tell if they stay there but they should.

More comfy on the road now, but that might have something to do with greasing the shackle bushes, they were dry

Next on the agenda is to replace a leaky head gasket....

Drivers side was fine, passenger side was leaking badly, I think i got it just in time before the block started pitting.
The only clue I had was a little air entering the coolant system intermittently.

A couple of times this engine went beyond 120 degrees so I was sort of expecting to replace the head gaskets at some stage.

Anyway the heads are fine from a visual inspection and check with straight edge and a .0015 thou feeler gauge.
The manual states the limit is 0.2mm
The heads and block are within 0.038mm (.0015 thou) 8-)

Will spend the next couple of days putting it all back together

You can see from the pics the passenger side has clean areas on pistons #2 and #4 ( a lot worse ) where the coolant was forced in each time I stopped the engine.

What? Are you just putting a new head gasket in and putting it back together without doing any performance mods?

Give him a break Matt. He's fixing the problem which really is the fact that the leaking head gasket was causing a clean spot. No leaking gasket = no clean spot and he'll be happy. It was the clean spot that was causing him grief. ;)

So Craig, we count this as water injection = fail? :P

  I guess you could say that is the reason...

Definitely don't want clean spots on pistons

Good to hear they fit, Salt. I'll be doing this once I wear out the super pro bushes.

Steve it seems better on the road for sure, certainly no more squeaking and soaks up the sharp/harsh little bumps if you know what I mean.
Is the equivalent or better than the poly bushes freshly greased and now maintenance free 8-)

Today I finally put the Triton back together, three and a bit days to fit new head gaskets

I'm a bit knackered after bending over into the engine bay for three days :(

Anyway all good, took for a spin tonight :D The power is back !

I had thought it was a bit sluggish lately but assumed I was just used to it, nup, the new gaskets have sealed the cylinders properly now and she has full compression.

I inadvertently left a couple of black marks on the streets   has lots more go than ever before it seems, anyway very happy boy here :D

While I had the heads off I also replaced the obviously worn valve stem seals, hopefully now it won't use oil either. Would be a real bonus...

This is a wicked build and as always highly informative. Keep up the good work and I'd love to catch this beast in the flesh

Thanks mate 8-)

Are you from Canberra ? I seem to recall you are, could be wrong...
If you are keen on a High Country trip sometime I try to attend them all 8-)

I have further engine plans that should happen in the next year or two, will reveal all eventually ;)

You recall correctly. I was actually thinking of trying to do one this year if one happens I'd love to make it happen.

So I have wanted some sort of canopy for a while now.

I had imagined an Alloy canopy with canvas over the top. However an ARB canopy came up for sale recently at the right price so I grabbed it.

Really not happy with the look but can fit so much more gear compared to the hard lid so practicality wins

Well something I did not expect after fitting the canopy was better fuel economy.

From 13 + L/100k to 12.7 and 12.1 L/100k from the last two tanks and current tank looks to be about 12.1 again. :D

Still uses heaps of LPG in comparison but needs to be tuned properly, above figures are petrol 8-)

Considering how I drive it is very good, if I didn't floor it every gear would get much better

Quite possible, always had the spare tyre bolted on top of the hard lid until now.

  Middle aged self confessed hoon, well thats how I drive it, I don't really speed but it is fun dragging off other cars at the lights

Hmmm, this makes me wonder.. I'm happy when the fuel consumption goes below 14.5.. and I actually try NOT to hoon.. any suggestions where to begin looking for the cause ? ( 2009 ML V6, GLX-R, with a canopy ) :?: :?: :?:

Could be many things contributing.

Auto or manual ?

Do you run LPG ?

How many K's?

Serviced regularly ?

Depending on K's new spark plugs ?

How long have you owned the Triton and what sort of driving do you mostly do, city, HWY etc.

Another cause of bad fuel economy can be the primary oxygen sensors, they do have a limited lifespan.

I fitted a wideband O2 sensor to my exhaust with a digital readout, mostly for tuning but also I will know when the sensors are playing up or deteriorating....

I would have thought the the cats would last a long time  maybe they too have a limited lifespan.
How many K's cj ?
