Bennys MN GLR Build Up

Postby Bennys on Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:44 pm

About time we updated our details...

Back in July we started off with a MN GLR with the following specs:
Safari Snorkel
Factory Diff Lock
Mitsu 'Trade' Canopy
Tow bar
ARB Delux Bar
Roof Racks
BFGoodrich ATs
Neoprene seat covers
Smoked bonnet protector
Headlight protectors

and then we have since added:
Smoked weathershields
Uniden UH400SX
IPF900 Spots (covers sprayed black to keep with our black/red colour scheme)
'Rockslider' sliders
Bashplates
Ultimate suspension upgrade
and ditched the Mitsu tow tar for an ARB rear protection bar!

We have also got a dual battery and ARB air compressor mounted behind the rear seat. These are some pictures of the dual battery set up, with the 105Ah battery snugly fit behind the passenger side rear seat and the ARB compressor on the drivers side

the switch for the compressor is next to the rear air locker switch ready for a future front locker to be fitted :)

There is also a bridging switch located in the centre console and a battery level indicator.

We then have cables running to the tub to a fuse block, currently with output for 2 cigarette lighter sockets for when the fridge is taken out and about and other gadgets

We got a tigerz11 winch installed but didn't like the way the hook would rub on the hawse, tried hooking it to one of the tow points under the front but didn't like the rope being exposed to the elements and the hook being the thing that would hit terrain first so customised a rubber crutch tip to protect the metal

Currently we are building up a custom storage set in the tub, photos to follow on that shortly, maybe even this weekend if I get it finished :D

Looking good Bennys. I wish the GLXR had room behind the rear seat like that  . Looks like a shit load of space.

Really getting set up there Bennys, looks great.
I was surprised at the room there too...doesn't the MN GLR have a wind down window or something...sure saves some space.

Where abouts are you mate? Would be great to see you on a run and get a better look at your setup...

Maybe add your general location in your profile  >>>>>>

that's looking real good, i like the idea of putting the battery and compressor behind your back seat...
I especially like the way you were able to colour co-ordinate your 2nd battery...

I would be looking to add more hold downs to that battery. In the advent of a head on, not that I'm wishing that on anyone, there is a lot of weight being held in position by very little. I wouldn't want that battery bouncing around in my car. :(
When my wet cell dies, that is were my next battery is going. Looks the goods.

Hey guys, yeah I've been thinking of using some metal straps that hook in on the back of the battery tray and bolt through the front.

nise looking truck Benny. I also have my battery behind the seat, but am yet to tie it down properly. Is ther any chance of some more shots of how you have mounted it, or even catching up to have a quick look? at the moment I have just wedged my battery in between the recovery gear. I only went for a 55 a/h battery as I found the larger ones rubbed on the back of the seat, but seeing your set up, I might go for a bigger battery before I make it permanent.

Good looking set up Benny was interested in the battery location, but having the GLXR I can't fit one there :(

But as said earlier you will need some more strapping on the battery
Or as Speedy Gonzalez once said, it won't hurt, did it

Wow, your ride looks amazing! Red tritons for the win! I'm starting on my build soon, hope to get it to look like yours some day. Question about the canopy, do you find that the side latches on the rear window do not close and lock on fully some of the time? I've got the same canopy as you and I'm having that problem.

Cheers mate.

Yeah I'm kind of wondering if 2 ratchet straps would be sufficient to hold it down??

Hey mate, yeah we had the same problem with the rear windows, also the window above the tailgate really needed slamming to close, had to take it back to dealer to get adjusted twice. Not sure if its one from the rumored warped batch that I've heard about??
Windows are still really stiff to open and close though, and the forward ones are a pain in the arse to get to.

They probably would work but I would look at a more permanant fix maybe using the baby seat mount holes :?:

I've used the baby seat mount directly behind the battery to mount the back of the tray. The front of the tray is bolted to some lengths of steel angle that in turn bolt down to the rear seat mounts. The tray seems pretty solid, its just a matter of getting the battery tied down to the tray sufficiently.
Could always look at building a cage/box that bolts down into the tray. Not much clearance between the battery and back of seat though.

You can get heavy duty battery hold downs that work the same as the one you already have. I would buy two more of those and leave the original as is. Use three clamps instead of one. If your happy with the way the frame is bolted down then you should be sweet 8-)

I'm in the middle of mounting my battery in the same spot as Benny, Knowing where it is and what he has bolted it to, I think that the tray itself is as secure as you can get it without actually bolting through the floor, which would in itself be risky as I think the fuel tank is directly under that side. I figure that the heavy duty battery brackets should be sufficient to hold it in, maybe one lengthways and width ways. I will be doing much the same thing and don't foresee too many issues.

as mentioned in another thread, it is a good idea to put a label on the main battery to notify the emergency guys that there is a second battery behind the seat.

Those tires looked very small for the triton. I'm certain there is enough room for a larger set. Let me know if you decide to replace them as I know someone who would relish the opportunity to fit them on his SGV.

Very nice and pratical build there. I find the GLX-R a pain in some ways. SRS and rear window in particular.

Great setup. Nice looking truck.
Something for me to aspire to :)
Question about the battery in cabin. Is it safe? Does it not let off any gases?
