Snooozy's Build

Postby dan.batto on Sun Sep 18, 2011 9:33 pm

Very nice mate!! How nice is it not having to fill up all that often!!! Filled up mine today, 2 weeks and 1025km, but it wasn't full to the brim last time.

I usually last about 3 weeks anyway, I might get about 1 & 1/2 months to a fill now, will look for the cheap fuel price cycle now ;)
I should get around 1400km to a full tank. :)
-------------
edit
maths was a bit out, should be about 950km/tank @ 13lts/100

here's a few shots to update my build, :)
I will add the descriptions tomorrow. :geek: it's getting a bit late for to nite

-----Edit-----
Moved the reversing light, after fitting the ARB rear bar the light would only fit if tilted up. That would be fine if I was reversing up trees.
I welded a bracket on the bar & attached the light to that. Fits very nicely & works a treat 8-)

Finlay got around to fitting my diff/gearbox breather that I purchased in a group buy early in the year
I was lucky enough to have the early type of rear diff breather with the hose attached. Will try to get pics later
I removed center console to access the gearbox breather & fitted the hose using a brass fitting, I also removed the pop-up breather cover & attached a hose (secured with a clamp). I did not fit a breather to the front diff as it already has an extended hose which terminates high in the engine bay against the firewall.
I fitted the breather/filter on the RH side utilizing a bolt that normally has the wiring loom attached (it was the correct thread & size)

The amount of add-ons I had fitted meant I had several fuse holders in various places. It became difficult to remember which fuse did what. I fitted a Blue Sea fuse holder & re-wired all of the cables in corrugated split tubing.
I also fitted a 100A circuit breaker on the fuse/relay cover for the aux batt behind the rear seat.

The aux batt system is almost complete (I might re-wire part of it in heavier gauge wiring later). It also has a 100A circuit breaker so if there is a short with the cable on the chassis part way it will protect both batteries. I have fitted the Ctek DC-DC charger as the main component & have anderson, cig lighter & merrit plugs all fused separately. I have rewired the UHF to also use the aux batt for power. While I had the console/dash out I fitted a voltmeter in the dash with a changeover switch, this allows me to monitor the charge in both batteries. A BlueSea batt changeover switch also allows me to feed power back to the main if it gets a bit low & needs a kick. A merrit plug on the solar input side of the Ctek allows the connection of my solar panels (these are quite large & normally charge the van batteries on extended stays) I will look at smaller panels in the future.

The fridge mount table is now complete with the fitting of tie-down points. I used Black Widow fridge tie-downs to secure the fridge. It is a large fridge (Waeco CF80) & takes heaps of space but this fitting allows me to open the lid fully to get to the beer ;) . When I had it sitting on the seat it was very hard to get the supplies out as it sat so much higher.
My kids are all older now & dont usually go on trips so the back seat is not really needed, it is just 4 bolts to re-attach it when needed. The system will get its first try out in 2 weeks on the high country trip. We are planning on crossing the Simpson next Sept so we need to make sure it is a reliable system.

I made a frame to fit behind the front number plate. On a previous trip the plate bent to horizontal after a few wombat holes/creeks. I needed to reinforce it before the many river/creek crossings on the high country trip coming up.

2 full sized Unisolar panels (shade tolerant) were hinged together & have a catch & suit case style handles, folding legs were also fitted for easy setting up.

great product, happy so far.
Wiring is easy-4 wires. there is 2 models, std & solar regulated. best to cover yourself & get the solar version ;)

I used it on the national meet trip in a temporary setup & it worked a treat. at that time I did not have a fridge drawing off it as I had my van.
I am running the fridge off it this week & only do short daily trips so it does not get much charge time.
It will get a full try out in 2 weeks :D

off topic, are you heading to the leisure festival this weekend- not sure which day we are going

Looking good Snooozy, am very jealous of your space behind the back seat in the GLX (the glxr has the damn rear window motor). The fridge setup looks good, although do you have any idea if it would be possible to pull the bench seat out and replace it with one or two bucket seats? I've been looking into it as it would mean I still have people carrying capacity, but won't have to pull the whole bench out should I want to put in a fridge slide.

See the build up of my old Triton here.

Its been done fraz. There was a photo posted on here who replaced the rear bench with two front seats. Don't think it was a forum members triton though.

Don't think there was much detail on how it was done though :?

Valerio for 1 removed his rear seat and added a single seat for his daughter. Look for his build thread, but he is in venezuala so regs are a bit different ;)

I think the problem here might be getting the rear seat mod passed by the authorities, I would imagine a lot of red tape.
If it was not done right & the vehicle was in an accident there would be hell to pay if someone was hurt or killed (even if the seat mod was not the cause) the insurance companies would probably wipe their hands of it too.

Would only need to be engineered, but I don't have a clue what that would take. :?

If it could be done it would be a very nice setup though 8-)

from memory they are 65w each. They are unisolar, these are shade tolerant so the output is not as high as some but they do produce when partly covered by shade/trees etc (as was the case on the Nat meet trip)

There is much more variety available now. I have had these for a few years & if I was doing it again I would probably go for a smaller lighter setup.

They will put out about 8amp in good sun, which runs the 80 Waeco easily all day & charges the battery at the same time.

as you can see the voltage or the aux batt is higher than the main batt due to to ctek
the switch under the meter is to change between the 2 batts.

a few more bits to add

after the High Country trip in November & the river crossings the thought crossed my mind about emergency escape.

the river crossings were about as extreme as you would want to go & it was necessary to have the windows up part way.
being electric windows, if we were to be flooded would they still work :?:

for about $12 on ebay I purchased a break-glass hammer, here's where I mounted it. It does fall off sometimes when I close the door but a little velcro will fix that

It also has a seat-belt cutter, although you should NEVER wear seat-belts when doing river crossings

here's a few shots of my under tub water tank, pictures pretty much speak for themselves.

Made from 100mm sewer pipe & using 100mm clamps for brackets & gal standoff brackets.
I will add a detailed write up later.

PLEASE NOTE...the fuel filter idea did NOT work. There was too much resistance to airflow & I could not get a flow. I am in the process of re-working the vent. will post pics when done

The tank holds about 17lts of which 15 is usable. I think the difference is mainly that it will not fill completely with the current breather system.
I have not worked out the cost yet, but it is probably more than I would have liked. It is always harder & more expensive when trying to build from scratch, a few mistakes were made along the way.
