Snooozy's Build

Postby Snooozy on Fri Jan 28, 2011 7:39 pm

I have been going to start a build thread for some time as I need to put all the mods together in one place with photos.
If I put it off any longer it’s going to get too hard & I will not do it at all. :?
When I look at the mods list it does look extensive but I’m a long way from finished yet.
Rather than re-write some of the mod fit-outs, for now at least I will just place the link to the appropriate thread.

A Little History About Me.
I grew up in a Toyota household, with the first 4x4 experience being 1968 SWB Landcruiser (I would have been about 7 years old at the time). We traveled far & wide in that vehicle & I have many fond memories being out in the bush or outback growing up.
Dad was one of the founding members of The Toyota Landcruiser Club of Victoria. I have a lot of very good memories of that time of my life. This forum reminds me in many ways of the early days of the TLC, in that everybody was so friendly, and had a common cause & interest, I hope that never fades from here. All Cruiser drivers would also wave to each other as they passed on the road, something some of us Triton drivers try to do.
There were 6 in the family & Dad often didn’t know how to travel light (think I know where I get it from). We would travel 6-8 hours for a trip with not much more than just enough room to put our feet – no such thing as legroom, we considered that as normal & just what we did back then. There were also no such things as electronic devices, DVD’s, iPod’s etc to keep us entertained, games of I spy & Dad’s cassette player (The Shadows, Marching Bands, & Classical Music.) We had no control over what was to be played, probably the reason I can listen to a wide range of music now, with the exception of Rap & Screamo.

My First 4x4
Originally I was looking to purchase a second hand 4x4 as I didn’t want to layout big $$$. I tow a small van on holidays & also have a 3.85mtr tinny for fishing/exploring. The old Fairmont wagon was struggling with the van at over 300k on the clock & the air conditioner was shot. It was not very comfortable in summer & I needed to be able to launch the tinny from the sand at our holiday spot. I also had always wanted my family to experience some of what I had as a kid & see some of the bush & outback sights, for that we needed a 4x4.
I did the usual looking around & was considering a Navara :o (Hilux’s were just too overpriced  ) when a friend told me some stories about motors having major issues, the back seats were also a big (or should I say small) issue - no room. The friend had just purchased a Triton himself & raved about it. I took a closer look & did the math, 10 year warranty, ABN discount, $32,888 drive away, why buy second hand? It was run-out time on the ML model & they were in short supply. The dealer had one left in stock a White GLX, I took it for a test drive & was hooked. The deal was done that day & I picked it up the following week.
Much to the wife’s horror I haven’t stopped spending money on it since. (sorry, that should read I haven't stopped improving it since  )

Great way to start off a build thread Snoozy! Got me hanging for the next instalment now.

I even started feeling anxious when you took one of the last of the MLs for a drive, thinking "buy it...just buy it...", even though you obviously did (I'm quite simple). :?

Like you I didn't consider the Hilux because of the price (and the simpleton styling), and seriously considered the Navara, until I found out about their engine issues.

To Start With the Basics.
ML 2009 GLX Dual Cab 3.2did Manual Transmission White
Purchased new in May 2009 I took advantage of the good run-out deals & ABN discount.
I went with the base model (GLX) for a couple of reasons, available $$, rubber floor mats, I didn’t want the extra stuff on it i.e. nudge bar, roll-bar, side steps, rear step, etc as this would come off anyway (why pay for stuff you don’t want) & it was all the dealer had available at the time anyway. I was not aware of the factory locker option & may have held out longer to get it if I had known. As it was run-out time I was worried that if I didn’t move on it quickly I would miss out altogether.

Factory Fitted:
Cruise Control & ABS

Dealer Fitted:
Tonneau cover, genuine tow hitch (being the GLX version I don’t have the problem of the bar getting hung up on departure angles), Genuine under lip tub liner.

Other Genuine Mitsubishi Accessories:
Custom rubber mats (made dealer throw them in for a stuff-up in the finance paperwork) smoke coloured bonnet protector, headlight covers, and dealer supplied dash mat.

Other Accessories:
Newtriton.net sticker (only small one on rear window for now, will be getting canopy soon)
Newtriton stubby coolers x2

1kg ABE powder type fire extinguishers in tub & 0.9kg BE powder in cab next to RH rear seat

Recovery Gear:
Winch extension, tree protector, snatch strap, 2 x winch blocks
Projecta STM072 150PSI Storm Air Compressor
ARB Tyre repair kit
ARB Tyre deflator
Recovery Hitch

Initial problems
I was ill the day I was to pick up the Tri, but was like a kid waiting for Santa so nothing was going to stop me. The result was that I didn't look over the vehicle as well as I should have at pre-delivery
What I found a few days later (too sick to take it out for a drive for the first 3 days I had it) was that when they drilled the holes for the tonneau clip, they left the filings on the lip of the liner to rust. :x It had to go back to the stealer after the first service to have liner removed, rust spots removed & re-painted where necessary.

it wasent till 2009 that they made different hitches ... before that they were the same for all models ... hence why some hang super low like mine ... mine suits vr / glx / glxr

Modifications:
First mod was EGR Blank Plate added (29-08-09 3500km)
After reading some of the horror stories re; sooted manifolds & speaking to a friend (Diesel Mechanic) this was a no-brainer, the sooner the better.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4813&hilit=egr+blanking+plate&start=175#p52746

Still to this day I have not had a CEL or limpy due to plate, It didn’t seem to effect economy although it’s hard to tell with all the other mods done since.

ARB Commercial Bar (added 1-10-09)
The next mod that I did was the bar, I had a good look around at different styles but as I had the GLX I was limited as to options without factory flares.
I went to one of the main 4x4 shows in Melb. with a couple of things on the list, bullbar & winch (more on winch later).
I had a good look at TJM, Ironman & ARB. For me the style of the Ironman & ARB suited better to my taste but the ARB quality was the seller. The material & finish just seemed better & stronger.
I got a decent price & locked it in with a deposit but had to wait 6 weeks. :(
I decided to have it fitted locally as I would be easier than having to spend a day in limbo stuck in northern suburbs of Melb.
I asked our local 4x4 specialist but he was unsure about cutting bumper so referred me to a local panel beater. All was good & after bar was delivered fitting was arranged.
It looked good when I picked it up but when I got home I noticed a scratch on the headlight where the bar had scrapped. Not impressed! :x Hindsight is a wonderful thing & if doing it again I would do it myself.

Avenger Mako 9500lb winch (added 4-10-09)
Purchased directly from Avenger at the show (they don’t deal directly any more :( )
After I got the bar fitted I figured it would be fairly easy to un-bolt bar to fit winch.....well sort of  .
It was just as well I had a winch to fit because many of the bar bolts were finger tight, don’t know what I payed the fitter for??
Had to turn the free-wheel release handle around to suit bar cut-out & it fitted very snugly into position. The STD fairlead did not suit the bar so I had previously purchased a Warn fairlead from fleabay that fitted perfectly.
If I was doing the winch fit again I would go synthetic rope, much less weight & floats in water, the offset Hawse fairlead was also not available at the time of purchase so I went steel cable.
After hearing some pretty scary stories of louts hooking cable either under or over cars to towbar & shorting power pins, effectively writing off cars by bending chassis, I decided I want to protect myself from this. I fitted a heavy duty power cut-off switch with removable key under the bonnet.

For all of my accessories wiring (except winch) I mounted a couple of din rails to connect power wires, one for +ve & one –ve. I did this to prevent having multiple wires direct to battery. One heavy wire from battery to rail & all accessories connect to there, makes for a much neater job & reduces the chance of electrical problems later. Plastic protection cover is removed for photo.

Next up was GME TX-3100 miniature UHF (added 4-10-09) Now I had a bullbar I had somewhere to fit a CB antenna. I had a Uniden CB from my previous car but even though it was a small unit was struggling to find somewhere to fit it. At the 4x4 show previously mentioned I also ended up with a new GME CB (don’t know how that happened) antenna/base. The small size of these is ideal for newer cars with limited space. I considered fitting into the compartment above heater controls but due to lack of storage I decided to leave that space for other things (glasses etc) I thought ‘what the heck’ I’m keeping this car for a long time so it’s time to get some holes drilled. I fitted CB to passenger side console in easy reach & not in the way. Power was from accessory wire via ignition key, the problem was that every time I started the engine the unit would power off & I quite often forgot to turn it back on. I rewired it straight to battery but still have the same problem. When I fit the aux battery I will wire CB directly & that will eliminate that issue.

To save the passenger having to listen to the CB chit chat I cable-tied a small extension speaker under the headrest, also makes it much easier for us half deaf folks to hear whats going on

Tekonsha Voyager Electric Brake Controller (added 2-11-09)
Removed from my previous vehicle.
I looked for a suitable place to mount the controller & first option was on plastic panel under steering column, I found that I hit my knee on it & had to move it. After a search of the forum I saw a few owners had removed the ashtray & mounted it in there. Removing the facia panel & doing some checks it seemed like a good place to mount the unit. The wiring was no real problem (I have plenty of experience in wiring & electrics) I used heavy wire for power from the battery via a self
re-settable circuit breaker & ran heavy wire from controller to trailer socket for brake activation.

Blue Sea Battery changeover relay (added 2-11-09)
I purchased a Blue Sea battery changeover relay from a nearby 12 specialist (The 12Volt Shop) Unlike the redarc these do not have exposed terminals & was easily mounted on the passenger firewall. I also used the option of a led inside cabin to indicate what phase the relay is in (charge/standby) It also flashes continuously while there is no trailer connected (looks like an alarm indicator)

I ran 2 pairs of wires to the rear of the vehicle through plastic tubing, cable tied to chassis. One pair via circuit breaker & charge relay for van or second battery hook-up & the other via a fuse for an accessory power source. These are both terminated in Anderson plugs. These are hanging down for the photo, normally tucked up out of harms way.

Lightforce 170 Striker Driving Lights (added 17-01-10)
Fitted myself using heavy duty wiring & relay. The hardest part of the fitting was trying to find the trigger wire from high beam switch. I would have preferred to wire the switch under the dash. I gave up looking & connected relay trigger to high beam wire behind headlight.

Jaycar Speedo Corrector (added 17-01-10)

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4383&hilit=speedo+fix#p65449

Since fitting the speedo corrector I have only had to adjust is when I did the tyre upgrade. My speedo is always spot on to GPS now, so if I was to get done for speeding it would be my fault.
i Pod connection. During the fitting of the speedo corrector I removed stock radio looking for speedo signal wire. To my amazement I noticed a 3.5mm phono socket on a cable, that got me thinking. I plugged in an iPod & it worked perfectly, bonus. I found a phono plug extension cable in the shed & ran it under the console to the pocket, drilled a small hole for cable & now have iPod connectivity. The advantage of the placement is that the iPod can stay in console & not in view from would-be thieves.

Avenger Flares (added 26-02-10)
I purchased my flare kit from Avenger & it was a fairly straight forward fit, I would however recommend having a helper to push them in against guard while you attach screws.

VR 16x7 alloy wheels (added 20-02-10)
Purchased from eBay seller with partly used tyres for $520
Looking back I would probably have been better off just buying a set of black Sunrasia Steels instead of the alloys. I am concerned that the alloys will get scratched & damaged on rocks.

Suspension Upgrade: (added 08-05-10)
The weight of the bar & winch took its toll on the front suspension. The bumper rubbers were only just off the wishbone arm & had worn the paint off where it was bottoming out constantly. I was not after a radical lift so decided on the Pedders HD springs & Gas strut upgrade. Couple of reasons for going Pedders, Australia wide stores & warranty availability, many years of experience including rally cars & I was able to get trade price for fitting with some contacts I had. I don’t carry heavy loads often & only tow occasionally so I did not think the rear really need a lift at this point. I opted for a shocker upgrade only, being the GLX I think it had heavier STD springs than the higher optioned cars anyway. Handling was improved immediately & there was next to no body roll around sweeping bends. I have since checked for sagging & it appears very minimal if any, Pedders do claim to pre stress their products to prevent sagging issues.

Before the upgrade there was less than 10mm clearance on the bumper rubbed

Front Suspension:
Pedders Trak Gas Sports Ryder Shocks
Pedders Trak Ryder Coil Springs - 40mm lift ( with the added bar/winch weight the overall height ended up being back to about std height, with much better ride & handling)
Rear Suspension:
H/D Trak Ryder Shocks

Chip-it Chip (added 08-07-09 14610km)
Purchased as part of the group buy, a chip was something that I did not actually have on my list. There had been a couple of moments where I pulled out of a side street thinking I had plenty of time to beat the traffic & the car seemed to lag quite badly, to the point of being dangerous. That was the main reason for the chip, the other being an attempt to get better fuel economy. I am not a rev-head driver but it is sometimes hard not to use the extra grunt gained, it also makes passing much easier, when you stick your boot in it just wants to go. Originally I did have issues with the chip causing limps & fault codes but this was eventually tracked back to a faulty wiring loom, this was replaced by Chip It with no fuss. I do praise the backup service with 24/7 mobile phone help available.
Search Chipit & you will have enough reading to last a couple of weeks.

Goodyear Wrangler 265/70-16 A/T rubber American Version (added 31-07-10).
My eldest son was acting manager at a Goodyear store & I was able to get family discount. The price & recommendation on these tyres was the main reason for going Wrangler. They are very quiet on the road & so far have been good on various surfaces, mud, dirt, sand, rocky. They do have a tendency to let go in the wet from a standing start (partly due to the extra power from the chip). I just make sure that I am gentle on the loud pedal.

The spare is different tread pattern to the running wheels. It was given to me so as I had all four wheels with the same rolling diameter.

Baysie Bash Plates (added 09-10-10)
After the SA-Vic Border Track Trip I understood the reason for a bashplate upgrade. Even in sand/mud the old plates were quite bent out of shape. I’m glad it was not rocks that I hit. I arranged for a small group buy for some Victorians - to save on freight costs & we had 4 sets shipped to my work. Straight forward fit & only had to file one hole slightly. The Baysie plates are of high quality & highly recommended.

No comparison to Baysies plates & the tin stock plates

Catch Can (added 09-10-10)
Reading the posts on here regarding the oil/sludge build-up in manifolds I decided that just an EGR blank was not enough, I needed a catch can if I was going to get many years of trouble free driving. I won’t go into the details of catch cans as there’s plenty of threads on the subject.
I purchased a can from eBay, the hard part was finding one that suits. I needed one that the lid can be removed & was small enough to fit neatly out of the way, I also required it to have large enough hose attachments so as not to restrict flow of gasses. The one I ended up with also had a drain plug & sight gauge. As others had done before me went with stainless steel scourers to filter the oil. I welded (if you can call what I do as welding) a bracket to mount the can behind the air cleaner box, a hose was fitted inside the can on the ‘in’ side to force the gas/oil mix to the bottom & not straight back out, I stuffed about ½ doz scourers in & sealed it up. The hose connection was a little tricky because the hose I used wanted to kink. I inserted copper tubing into the hose after bending it to the correct shape.

DiD seat spacers (added 29-11-10)
I didn’t have a big problem with the seats myself, however when I picked my son up on the way to the Border Track trip it took him less than 5 min to comment on how uncomfortable the seats were. I tried out one of the other vehicles seats (with spacers) & noticed a marked improvement. So seat spacers went ‘on the list’. I got the ok to fit them from MOW&F after Grampians trip (it’s amazing what you are allowed to do after a good long trip). Check this thread for more details

Fumoto oil drain valve (added 29-12-10)
I waited until an oil change & fitted the drain valve (another group buy) Not much to say about the valve, it’s pretty self explanatory. Will make future oil changes very easy. I am now using Penrite HPR5 Engine Oil

Chain in tub for securing loads One of the cheapest, most useful & easiest mods I have done. I saw this idea in a thread somewhere & thought mmmmm I like that idea.

Window tinting (added 15-01-11)
I put in a call for Santa to help out with window tinting. He gave me a voucher for Tint Professor & had it done recently.
I only tinted the door windows as when the canopy goes on I would like to be able so see through the rear window. Although it doesn't look very dark (darkest legal) it is much nicer to drive without my arm burning in the sun.

That's as far as I have gotten at this stage, still lots more to come when the funds become available-
Future Modifications:
ARB canopy
2nd battery
Snorkel
Long Range Tank
Rear protection bar
Side steps/sliders & maybe brush bars
Set of drawers for tub
diff locks
Tools
Hi-Lift Jack
ETC. ETC. ETC

excuse my ignorance, but are the pipes on your catch can the right way about? id have though the deposits out of the engine would go to the bottom while the 'clean' air would go tot the filter from the top of the tank?

or have things been changed in later photos... confusing me further!

Great write up Snoozy. Can't wait til the next installment. It's amazing the long list of things you have done and I was thinking you have covered almost every thing and then you get to the end of the write up and there is still a long list of things to do.
When does that list get shorter?

The hose going from rocker cover goes into the catch can is on the side of the sight gauge, this is the one that goes to the bottom of the can. oily mist in at the bottom & clean fumes out at the top.

I have taken the lid off since installing the can & it is definitely working, small amount of oil in the bottom & the outlet hose is completely dry :D
Makes me confident that I am not going to have carbon issues later.
