Dan.Batto's Build

Postby dan.batto on Thu Mar 27, 2014 9:26 am

Well its been a long time since ive posted in here!

Nothing too big in the new in the mods category to post on.
New mods since I last updated:
-Boost Gauge in dash
- New tub setup - basically an empty tub, some ply on the floor, some storage boxes on the pass. side, a box around the fridge
- Water tank and pump - slimline tank that sits over the wheel arches
- Reverse lights from 4wd supplies - amazingly bright
- New antenna for the UHF, ZCG brand, its awesome!
- New reverse camera screen - cheapie off ebay but really good

Currently working on:
- Fibreglass Switch Panel. -Painting this went all kinds of wrong so am in the middle of sanding it back, ill then give it a new coat of some primer, then re spray the black gloss on (the gloss was the problem)
-Modify the current tub setup. I need to redesign the 12v setup so as i can easily remove the rest of thetub setup without removing the electrical.
- Internal canopy frame for piece of mind. At the same time replace the carryboy roof rack to canopy mounts, 1 to lower them and 2 the carryboy powder coating is extremely poor. It has peeled and flaked. At the same time ill re-powder coat the roof rack also as its just as bad. Not happy at all with their roofrack system!
- An open cage for the fridge rather than a ply box for better air flow

Question time for those 12v wiring minded folks:
I have read the wiring size diagram chart in the dedicated thread, here, but for the life of me still cant work it out.
What i plan to do:
A piece of pvc/plastic/something that like, create an electrical board to fix everything to. Have a blue sea 12v fuse panel to connect everything to. A pvc box to mount all the switches to. Inverter permanently mounted in the tub.

What I will be running off the fuse panel (I have included links to most items incase i have wrong calculations or if anyone is generally interested :geek: ) :
- Projector 600w Pure Sine Wave Inverter - Max Output 60 amps Details Here

- Approx 2m LED Strip Lights - Output approx 2 amps

- 2xLED Reverse Lights - Output 1.7 amps each= 3.4 amps Details Here

- Water Pump - Max Output 3 amps

- 2 x 12v Acc Sockets - Max Output 20 amps each Details Here

- 1 x Narva twin usb 12v socket - Max Output 2.5 amps Details Here

- Engel 40l Fridge - Max Output 2.6 amps Details Here

What I would like to do is run 1 set of wires from the battery to the tub hopefully to run all that. Now obviously im never going to have it all running at once, but if I add all that up it comes to 114 amps give or take a little. Going off the wiring diagram I will be running approx 6m of wire to the tub. What would the wire size be i require? I will fuse it at the battery end and install a circuit breaker at the tub end.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Bigger the better they say but I ran 6BS into the tub, voltage drop is no issue if you run it to a Ctek unit or simila rran mine into the back of the tub here

Dan I think the Bluesea fuse box is only rated at 30amps as I have a similar one. You would need to run a separate fuse for the inverter from the auxiliary battery. Maybe a small circuit breaker. Couple of pics of my setup. 1st one in the tray. 2nd one behind the rear seat. I ran 6B&S twincore cabling to the tub.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-METRES-X-6B-S-TWIN-CORE-CABLE-DUAL-BATTERY-SYSTEM-12V-6-B-S-10M-125-AMP-125A-/400646895372?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d486a770c&_uhb=1
It is rated to 125A which would cover what you need.

However, its doubtful you'd ever have a sustained load of the 114A for any great length of time, if ever. You're unlikely to have two devices plugged into the accessories socket pulling the full 20A each, plus running the inverter at full wattage, the fridge at full power and have reverse lights and strip lights on whilst using the water pump. You might find that on average you have the fridge and leds on, plus on occasion use the inverter and water pump. Total draw might not exceed 30A, if that.

Cal's right about not running the inverter or the distribution box. Somewhere I read that to calculate the draw of a device through a 240V inverter and find out that current draw on the 12V system, you divide the 240V devices wattage by 10 and this is close to the amps needed. Eg 200W device draws 20A, which then holds up with your 600W inverter drawing 60A.

You could piggy back the inverter wires off the main terminals of the Distribution block which bypasses the distribution block and run a maxi fuse or similar to the inverter. That is what I'm planning to do in my tub.

Dan.Batto's Build

Postby dan.batto on Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:02 pm

Awesome :D thanks for the help guys!
Ill go battery - fuse - circuit breaker - fuse box. After the circuit breaker ill tap a seperate line in for the inverter. All using 6BNS cable.

Siwren - your on the money, I didn't think I would get anywhere near the 125A at one time especially with what I'm running. But had to calculate the overall if in a once in a moon chance I used the inverter and something else lol. But my general use for the inverter isn't a long time use.
Cal - the blue sea is rated to 125A overall, but like you said 30A per circuit.

Dunga - ill run it from aux battery which is charged from a red arc smart start. If I get too much voltage drop ill look into ctec unit.

Thanks for your help guys! Appreciate it!

After EOI -
Contemplating selling my tub, Arb rear bar, Carryboy canopy with tradesman rack, lift up windows etc.
want to get a tray, but only at the right price will I part with it. If someone was interested in this please PM me, forum rules don't allow me to post this in for sale section, and I'm not selling unless someone came to me with a decent offer.
Setup would be worth, some where around $5600 - $6000 new. Canopy with rack was up around $4400. I'm aware I won't get this for it. I will only deal with this via PM or text as I don't want to break forum rules.

Tub will include form ply base and basic electrical setup but will exclude fridge slide (would considering including), engel plug, water tank and water pump. Again could possibly consider including some of these.

Sweet mate, joining the one's with trays lol.
I know the pain of trying to sell the canopy you sort of hope you get the right money for everything but I think you will end up splitting it up to sell it.

Did you get those tyres cheap? I know a bloke after some 697s but got quoted $400 a corner which is a bit out of control.

What size dave?
I got 245/70/16. I got a ripper deal by this guy (he is floating around here somewhere ;) ) but was quoted at other tyre stores $270 a corner. $400 is outrageous!
I stuck with stock size as these are used mainly on road so to keep fuel consumption down and gearing correct i stuck with these.
