I suppose they decided they couldn't give it to someone being stupid - can't be seen as condoning that behaviour!

suspension update

Postby 4wd26 on Thu Feb 02, 2012 4:32 pm

Just measured the front suspension (since it's a topic going around at the moment)

sitting at 570 fp, 575 fd, and 640 rear.

rear suspension is stock leaf pack with extended shackles and aussie super springs to cope with the loads

the aussie super springs are good at what they do- but I will not recommend on someone else's triton as the shackles will hit the chassis (a one size fits all approach that does not work on the triton)

you can see in the above pic the shackle, in the above case under droop- under compression and loaded up can hit the chassis

I thought you had Toyota rims? Those look like Hummer rims? We need a rim and tyre listing thread just to keep track of your holdings...

Re: 4wd26 2008 ML auto- suspension update

Postby 4wd26 on Tue Mar 27, 2012 7:45 pm

been saving for a while and slowly purchasing things for a final assault on the triton (yeah right)

I bought a front air locker from 4wd supplies
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=10109

bought a Torque Convertor Manual Lock-Up Switch
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=10540&p=243462&hilit=lock+up#p243462
http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=42065

bought a 6 switch panel

and got some 10mm spacers put in the front struts to counter the added weight of a upcoming winch install.

So- take it to Jonlin Autos (Cooporoo) http://jonlinautomotive.com/

and Lewis started on a weeks work- its not always going to go to plan.

First hurdle was in regard to the front air locker install- actually the install went like clockwork- every thing was in the kit and works great- problem was found in my diff.

I'm pretty sure the main shaft coming out of the diff on the passenger side is not supposed to look like this :o

I had a spare diff (as you do  ) so in the car and take it down to pull apart and salvage the part. I would think the wreckers will make you buy the "whole" diff- and I have no idea of how much that would be.

Second hurdle was that the rear brakes were metal on metal from a bad encounter with the glasshouse mud/ gravel slurry
needed new shoes, drums (couldn't be machined) and I think the term was master cylinders of both sides

I knew the brakes were bad as I went to stop on the way to the workshop and the pedal went to the floor- one of the master cylinders pistons pushed too far and the seal leaked- good timing

anyway the rest of the stuff was just time consuming
the auto lockup was one wire in the loom cut and power in- pretty simple wire loom but will help when towing and downhills (acts like a manual gear)

had the switches installed under the ashtray in a vacant spot available in the ML- the 6 switch blank fits well, but is a little hard to reach- but with the locker, compressor and auto lockup I don't see the requirement to use whilst driving much anyway.

The additional blanks will be filled with winch controls, and maybe another light switch.

The spacer in the strut was only 10mm but raised the suspension back to 600mm (centre of wheel) on both sides, although I also got the rubber bushes changed out as well, so that would explain the "additional" portion.

got the compressor mounted under the passenger seat- the 4wd supplies unit is bigger than the "airlocker compressor" roughly the same size as the larger unit- things had to be massaged to fit ;)

anyway the ride is back to being awesome- and the front locker works.

lets see what can keep up- twin locked and simex.....

4wd26 2008 ML auto- front locker install

Postby motoz on Tue Mar 27, 2012 8:34 pm

Nice job mate.

Twin Red Dog lockers are next on my list of mods to be performed. I'd be interested to read your feedback on how the front locker goes.

:)

Installed the winch over the weekend

rotated the housing on the gear end so that the winch could be fitted with the feet facing the front- required on a ARB Triton bull bar.

The winch came with rope- and also a fairlead. But the ARB bar requires a "offset fairlead" so a quick call to Boycee @ 4wdsupplies secured me a fairlead that fitted at a great price

fitting the winch wasn't so bad- well better than I thought- just getting the wires for the winch and control box in place with no fouling as well as keeping the other wires out of the way.

Will probably fit a isolator under the bonnet in the future- but the entire install is kind of stealth

control for the winch has been strapped to the solioniod end of the winch- bracket was made to fit on the curved surface
held in place with safety wire and a couple of zip ties- cannot go anywhere and the remote can attach through the access hole

other access hole allows me to turn the free spool lever- a little awkward and a bit more triming of the original bumper would have been better- but happy to leave it alone

how it finished up

looking down onto the winch- I'm pushing with a fair amount of weight on the bumper to show the winch- the bumper usually fits flush with the bar

Test run the winch and it fires up and works as it is susposed to.

only one remaining concern and that is the rear of the winch has 2 bars that hold it together- the top bar sits very close to my intercooler- will have to keep an eye on this.

rough height was 595mm both sides.

I would be thinking of it settling to 590- but will keep an eye on it- the winch and bar were not as heavy as I was expecting :?

along the way fitted up some rear headrest dvd players, and fuse holder.

ran 5 strand trailer wire through the firewall to under the passenger seat, more than enough power for the dvd players and setup a permanent power cig socket
