GG's MN GLX R Build up

Postby gg13 on Tue Oct 04, 2011 4:30 pm

Hi All.

I have only had my triton since early Feb 2011. Really enjoy the feel of the Diesel even if it is an auto.
Since picking it up i have added a canopy and a Black widow drawer set up ,carring basic tools and materials for daily workload, suddenly the back looks like its ready to sit.

I have read posts on this site and have already contacted Ultimate suspension , didnt think i would be needing them so soon.
I hope soon after to be replacing those stock tyres, and while im at it new rims. Feeling comftable in fitting 265/70/17's or 285/60/18's ( Micky t , coopers or Nitto ) after the lift, i am not sure on the offset to look at , zero or +12. I have not found anyone on the site that explains ether.

Will post pics as i go.

Only thing to think about in going to 18's in new rubber is they are soooo much more expensive  Each inch in diameter you go up......add at least $50 a tyre

If using a 265 or 285 tyre.......A zero offset will sit well out past the flare on a MN......a +12 with a 265 tyre will be just about flush with the flare. If you find a rim you are dead set keen on and its only a 0 offset......you can always put a 235 tyre which will bring it back in nearer to the guard. Hope that helps you mate ;)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

The 265/70R17 will fit inside the guards and looks good on the triton, and it'll also set your speedo right. That being said, anything over a 255 is illegal, from memory, due to rolling diameter, so you'd have to see about getting it engineered if you want it to be perfectly legal

See the build up of my old Triton here.

What is legal depends on the state you are in. As far as I know most states allow 4WDs to increase diameter by 50mm. I believe Qld is still the same as cars at 15mm.
The standard diameter for an MN is 750mm which allows you to go up to 800mm depending on the state rules. My understanding is that the diameter of the tyres when new is used to calculate if they are legal so putting on tyres with a diameter over 800mm will never be legal even if they are worn down several millimetres.
This means that legal sizes include 265/65 17 (diameter 777). Sizes that are illegal include 265/70 17 (diameter 803).
You are unlikely to be fined but in the event of an insurance claim some companies may try to find a way to deny your claim.
I would stick with 16 or 17 inch rims. There is a much larger range of tyres available and are less expensive.
I went through the same process before deciding on staying with the factory alloy 17s. I have replaced the original tyres with BF GOODRICH A/T 265/65 17.
Remember , just like newspapers everything on the Internet is true except those things you know anything about.

Thanks guys

Good information and advise, now have a direction in what i should be looking for . Was swaying towards 17 ,as you all said there is a larger range and priced better.

But first things first , suspension upgrade , the rear end is looking pretty sad and feels terrible.

Managed to install a few basic mods over January.
Got the sunspension done by Ultimate, Ken and Brendan were brilliant and very enthusiastic about there product.
Installed a 2 Din stereo with reverse camera , nav, ect..... and managed to keep the original computer by fitting it into the space were the original radio was.
Last week the tyres and wheels came in , MT's 265/70/17 changed the whole look .

Looks great mate. 8-)

Was it hard to get the factory computer to fit there? It looks a bit like the top of the display might be hard to see from the drivers seat, how does it go? Any info on how you made it work would be appreciated ;)

Hi Mikalo
The tyres and rims were just over $ 500.00 a corner , 85% of that were the tyres, the rims are load rated .

4wd26
The tyres were the main purpose , rims were a late impulse buy, ( i suffer from that desease) but i'm glad i got them.

Very interested in how you moved the factory computer. Any pics/instructions of its removal?
