Now that we’re starting to install a few accessories I figure it’s finally time to start a build up thread. We’re planning to tackle the Cape August/September 2012, and the wish list seems endless, so I’ll just add to this as I go.
Ok, from the beginning…
February 2010:This is the day we picked up the new ute – stock, with only a factory rear diff-lock.
March 2010:A couple of weeks after this a Rhino-liner was sprayed onto the tray. Works well, really happy with it - although approx 1 year down the track and it’s quite faded and has a lot less ‘grip’ than it originally had. I guess they’re probably more designed to use with a tonneau cover, hard-lid or canopy, which would prevent the fading.
At about 200km’s it was off to ARB to install a UHF (iCom IC-400 remote head) and Aerial (RFI CD5000) from Prestige Communications. While it was there they also installed some HID-converted IPF 900XS spotlights and an ARB Air Compressor under the front passenger seat.
April 2011:1 year later, and not much has happened accessories-wise. After much research regarding tyre sizes, brands, AT vs MT, we bought a set of Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 LT255/65R17. We kept it at this size to try and stay legal. I’ve been pretty impressed with them so far, they seem to handle mud well, and don’t seem too bad on sand and bitumen.
May 2011:From here, we purchased a set of Baysie’s famous indestructible bash-plates. These have saved us on many occasions, and I would definitely purchase them again.
October 2011:After a couple of PMs and kind offers from fellow forum members, we purchased a Safari Snorkel and Chill came over to help me with the install.
It was an early start (well for me, apparently he’s always up at this time
) and before we knew it I was drilling into the side of my pride & joy…
It became quite addictive, and before long I had speed-holes the whole way up the side of the guard:
The finished product:
A HUGE thanks to Chill for lending his tools and time for the install, and talking me into drilling the first few holes
Absolute champion.
After the successful install, we took the ute up to Conondale National Park for the weekend, but after an off-loading detour (you know the ones
) we didn't make it to our campsite until 2am
. The following day we ran into froggymicb and family enjoying a weekend away as well.
Such a nice area up there, although after reading how easily the Hilux rolled on the Glasshouse trip report, this had me a little worried for a second…
As did these little fellas...
But back to the build-up, and the next project on the list is to make a start on the barwork. I’m awaiting delivery of the ARB Deluxe Winch Bar and Rear Step Tow-bar. The DIY bug has bitten, so anyone with any tips, tricks or useful info with the install of these, I’m all ears
