Tonneau cover differences...

Postby aardvark on Thu May 23, 2013 11:32 am

Hey guys,

I'm trying to make a decision between the two tonneau covers that Mitsubishi offer - the flush mount, and the one you tie down with external hooks.

Can anyone tell me which would be better, and what the difference is in how they fold back or are removed?

I intend to cart a couple of dirt bikes in the back of my Triton, so don't want to have to leave the tonneau cover on the vehicle, taking up space, if it's not needed.

Personally ive just ordered the Soft Flush Tonneau Cover as later on i want the Canopy so i dont want the tie down points left on the vehicle.

Also just for your information the Soft Flush Tonneau Covers have just arrived in Australia and when i ordered mine a couple days ago there was only 50 left out of 260.They are very popular.

Just had the flush one fitted very happy as the top of the tub is protected and looks great they clip on and have an internal bungee clips for over size loads, probably not as waterproof as the others , just poured down for two days, travelled 200 Kim and had water in tub not much but still there.

Looks heaps better, they are like the ones on commondoor utes

You are lucky getting hold of one dont know where you live but here in NSW im in the Hunter Region its so hard to get one.I had it ordered and was waiting for phone call to say come in and have it done as i was told that they had 50 left just had a call and its not happening as they cant tell if the 50 have been unpacked from the shipment yet this is wherever that is not at the dealer. So frustrated such the runaround!!!

Thanks for the info so far...

For those with the flush mount cover:
1) Does it fold back easily if you want to put something in the tray that would stick out at one corner? (Like a length of timber).
2) Can the whole thing be removed easily? Does it always stay attached and just get folded back?

The cover is great easy to remove and replace, you can undo a corner or side to stick items out.
The cover has a wedge type nylon strip on all sides which clips in to the Aluminium edge.
The Aluminium strip is fixed to the tub with stainless pop rivets, nice fit.
The bungee straps have hooks which fit neatly under the Aluminium strip, for when you have large loads.
I was very impressed with it, easy to fold up in to a triangle and then roll up.

Thanks Hutch! Just what I needed to know.

If the cover is completely removed from the vehicle, is there anything at the cabin end of the tray (along the edge of the back window), that stays on the vehicle and reduces the room in the tub? I'm just thinking about the venetian blind style metal ones that have a bar near the window, and would mean having to rest my dirt bike tyre against it.

Hi,
No reduction in room,
I have the standard white roll bar(if you can call it that) that is welded to the tray.
The Aluminium strip is fitted as a piece of 3-4 mm angle with cut outs where it goes around the upright bars.

the only pain in the butt thing is taking them fully on and off.
you have to slide it up between the roll bar and the rear windscreen if you get me then it slides out of its retaining channel.
to be honest i reckon its a great addition...i got mine off the ebay site think the shop was in vic.
putting them on is also much easier with a second person to slide the cover through the retaining strip while you stand in the tray!

Thanks again guys.

One more quick question, if I may?

What about if I put something taller than the tray, in the tray? How flexible is the flush mount cover? For example: let's say I had a large box, and didn't want it to get wet. With the regular tonneau cover, I could pull the cover over and hook it down. Because the regular cover is quite flexible, I would probably be able to do it. What about with the flush mount?

If it is going to be used as a proper ute you will need a proper tonneau. None of the fitted ones are any good for carrying gear - they are just like the factory hard lid in that respect.

The issue is a good aftermarket tonneau while pretty cheap, wont look as finished as the flush mount ones. You also you should NEVER get the elastic loops.

They are hopeless. They break, don't stretch enough to cover large loads etc and WILL rub the paint off your tub no matter how much contact and other stuff you use to try and protect it.

I've had 3 Tritons - all work horses and the best option is a bungee that threads through the eyelets all around the tub.

I regularly carry loads up close to as high as the roof and the tonneau generally still covers the load and about 75% of the ute tub and the bungees still stretch down and secure it.
Doesn't look like it but that bungee will stretch 3 feet in 4 or more points to cover a big load and not flap at all.

As I said doesn't look quite as pretty but works much better in every circumstance. This is the one I have on my tray but is the style that also works best on a tub if you need to cover all shapes and sizes with no hassles.

That was my concern with the flush mounted one. When I head off camping or racing, I will need to carry some items that are taller than the tub. Whilst the one you have fitted looks the best way to go, at the moment I only have a choice between the two factory options - flush mounted, or with the external elastic loops.

I think I'm going to stick with the elastic loops, unless someone can give me a reason other than "looks" to go with the flush mount option.

Completely off topic Homer, but what are the wheels you have on the Triton in your avatar? I have black Sunraysias on my GQ. Will they fit the Triton?

Too bad you have to go genuine :( the loops don't let you carry much at all and they break.

Wheels are the factory alloys powder coated black. $60/wheel.

Your sunnies probably wont fit. They need to be a deep dish on the inside to clear the calipers. You could always try though...

Go the flush fit looks better, is functional and has the same flexibility as the other because there is bungee stuff under the flush fit that hooks into the same place as the cover so you can carry oversize stuff.

kxboss I've posted up your photos properly for you as your links weren't making a whole lot of sense.

Is the bungee on your tonneau a continuous one like Homer was on about? So kind of the same but internal rather than external? Hard to tell from the photos but the first one sort of looks that way.

Thanks for that I have been trying to make sense of the pic thing.
They have an internal bungee system for above gunwhale heights and the alloy thing on the top of the gunwhale is like they have on holden utes, the cover clips onto it with a flexible plastic runner attached to the cover.
It is very easy to remove and replace.

Yeah worked it out.

probably should have made the pics a bit bigger for quality but I hope you get the idea.
The cover will accomadate larger loads by using internal bungee but is flush with the sides when not carrying larger loads on and off faster than old type and this is a Mitsubishi fitted cover. the tub line was $261 fitted from dealer at the same time.

Do you know if there is a part number I can give to Mitsubishi? Because this looks like the way to go.

At the moment, I have a choice between flush-mount tonneau or "soft tonneau cover" cover, which I'm pretty sure is the one with external hooks.

Its just called a flush fit tonnau cover.

If your getting the tub liner it needs to be an under rail one or cut the over rail one down.

They can be hard to get from Mrbishi I waited two months for mine as they are popular and they under ordered, but I believe supply has picked up
