2013 glx headboard

Postby jhuckfeldt on Sat Jun 15, 2013 4:19 pm

I have purchased a new sports bar at a good price recently and to fit it I will need to remove the headboard. Also the headboard removal will allow me to tint back window too I guess...before I get to it with a cutting disk, I just want to make sure that a genuine sports bar will fit the glx, and what are the best ways to finish off the cut metal?

I'm in the same boat as I'll be fitting a hard cover and sportsbar shortly.

I'm thinking of taking to the sides with a reciprocating saw and then an angle grinder to the welds on the vertical bars. I expect that there will be a little unintentional grinding to the adjacent metal so a little filler may be required.

I'll finish off the metal with some undercoat and spray some silver on top - I'm just wondering if that will do? The side rails will leave quite a sharp edge which I expect will be hard to stop from rubbing the paint off, perhaps i should grind them low and then skim a coat of filler over the top.

Any advice appreciated.

Oh and fwiw, you can attach the sportsbars with the headboard still in place and it doesn't look naff at all (though some may disagree). I saw a [pic of one but can't remember if it was this forum or another.

be careful with a reciprocating saw.
When I cut my head board off for the canopy I noticed the blade was too long and would have hit the rear window and the body work.
So I ground the blade down to the required length first.

Then used the angle grinder to take it down level.
Don't go too hard as the heat will blister the surrounding paint
Painted the bare bits with some primer and then proper paint

Cover the whole car with some drop sheets or something and then blow it off with compressed air once finished

Wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reply mate. He hasn't been on here since October.

No real problems doing the job (I've done a couple). Just cover everything and go easy.

Also as my reply said above mate, you can have both if you want, you dont have to remove the headboard to install the sports bar

Hi Im fitting a glxr sports bar to my glx and I want to leave the headboard in place. Will the genuine soft tonneau still fit properly because I assume the bar will sit farther back than it does on the glxr? The dealer said they make a different bar for the glx, I assume this is shorter than glxr bar so the tonneaus still fit? Anyone have experience here? Cheers

i decided to fit the sportsbar with headboard in place. It looks good and i can still secure the dog in middle of tray. I will have to get a custom made tonneau so does anyone know someone good in the Brisbane area?
