Bull Bar/Scrub Bar/Side Step Compatibility

Postby tritonmatt76 on Mon Aug 18, 2014 9:25 am

Hi all,

I've searched the site for an answer to this before anyone has a hissy fit.

I have a deluxe ARB steel bar and want to fit sidesteps/scrub bars to it, the ARB set up is way over the top in price compared to TJM and Ironman, I have also had a very good quote for a custom set up (which wont be ADR compliant).

Vehicle is an MN Dual cab GLX-R MY15.

Question is- Do all the other brands fit an ARB bar, do some, do any??? if not can they be "easily" adapted????

cheers and thanks in advance for any info that can be shared.....

I've read that both the TJM and opposite lock scrub bars fit, but they need different brackets where they join the bar. Whether what I've read is correct or not is another thing perhaps. But if you ask OL or TJM you'd expect them to know.

I was thinking the same thing Dave, a different 't' piece where the bar hoop joins the brush bar would sort it as they are bolted on not welded.

May require a little more work for the slider/step join but at worst can only see it being a trim bar back a touch to allow installation of a separate joining piece.
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

My understanding is TJM and OL aren't airbag compatible... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Umm you'd be wrong if you mean their bullbars. Not sure how/why scrub bars would be airbag compatible unless you are talking about side steps and side curtain airbags?

Oh derrrr... Obviously in reference to scrub bars and side steps...

I was told by TJM Geelong and OL Melton they are not curtain airbag compliant.

Seven years ago.....My ARB side protection rails had to be 'adapted' to fit my ARB winch bar! I fitted the side steps to where the brackets suited the tapering chassis and then had to cut about 40 mm off the rail where it met the winchbar hoops!
How have they been fitting together now days?

I have arb ones they are not airbag compatible because they are for the ML

I have TJM ones on an ARB bar, they are not airbag compatible because they are for the ML I bought them 2nd hand for my MN

They have been used and abused and they even have a matching bow in the steps on either side now.

Righto all, refreshing an old thread. My MN Glxr is in need of some side steps after bending the stocko ones (shock horror). The manufacturers seem to have complianced a few steps now with air bags. ARB are air bag compliant, but at just over 1k are pretty exy. TJM and opp lock both retail at about 700, TJM are airbag comp, whereas Opp lock don't formally state so... MCC is also a player, with their recently released set at a little over 600 and airbag compatible! TJM only have 2 mounts onto the chassis rails, everyone else is 3. So, the MCC seems to be the best deal, but does anyone else have any other thoughts or experiences? I know they won't be as strong as sliders, but at least need not be bent by some mud or clay like the last set ! Cheers

Have you thought about getting rock sliders?
I recall reading on another forum that AVA make rock sliders that are airbag compatible. Might be worth a phone call.

Seems like the AVA ones are not airbag compatible, they sell the xrox sliders which are. About 1100 apparently? I can't work out how the sliders are priced the same as the bullbar

How hard is it to get non-airbag compliant ones certified by an engineer?

Impossible? Or an option?

None to sweet FA I would say, unless you let him do a test by driving a truck into the side of your vehicle.
I doubt any engineer anywhere would touch that sort of thing without a lot of research, and that involves dollars at your expense

I have a arb delux bar ( triton is non flair) and tjm side steps and rails. All fit very well and are completely legal including air bag compatible. However I would no be able to fit flair on due to the side rails are only about 30mm out from the body each side.

Hmm i think a recreational ML would be better than an MN then hey.

3.2 litre engine and scrub bars/less safety gear = more fun

Yep. Less safety equipment, LSD and better diff ratios.
Thats the one you want if your going to go wild. Even better is the 09 model.

got a price from TJM the other day $1300, they weren't interested when I told them it was an ARB bar I think that is why the huge cost, MN requires side air bag compliant or insurance may be void
