rooftop tent rack

Postby muscat1708 on Sun Oct 12, 2014 10:45 am

Hey guys just wondering if anybody has pics of a rack they built over the tub of a ml for a rooftop tent. I've seen alot of the ones online and on this site for the mn but none on a ml with the curved back tub. Just wondering if anybody has or what they did to overcome the curve thanks in advance

Mate check out Kwyjibo's build.

He has a trick setup for the RTT on his ML. Also one of the South American members had a rack before he put the canopy on.

:D
One day your life will flash before your eyes. Will it be a good show ???

I reckon you could adapt one for the ml similar to what motoz did for his mn. That was a good setup!!

I decided against a tall rack so the tent doesn't create any drag in the wind ... Made up kind of a hard lid from checker plate ....

Hey Muscat,

I mounted my rooftopper on my trailer but it'd be easy to swap out my current roof rack for a RTT rack and mount it on.

It looks pretty hideous in this view on the car it looks allright.

I'm pulling it all off at the end of them month to lower the rack closer to the roof and add some diagonal bars instead of vertical at the rear.

More details available in my build thread.

Aww yer nice good stuff, yer I was planning on having the hard base of the rooftop level with the roof to reduce abit of drag and lower centre of gravity without losing to much room. That is the thing with these style side dual cabs, Tub room is fairly limited espically with the ml

you can see the very basic design from the 2nd photo, the curve at the end really doesn't affect the frame, it just sits slightly high at the back... makes no difference.

This type of frame design was great because nothing came into the tub itself allowing you to fully utilize space, the side rails are more than strong enough :P

It is also very quick and easy to swap it out (normally i run around with the hard lid on) but generally a 2 man job due to awkwardness of the frame size ;)

The frame is outside the tub itself, only the angled steel sits on the top lip of the tub and on the inside edge, and is bolted through along its length. I hope that makes sense I no longer have the frame or close up photos explaining it

Tent rack sorted, just in time for Easter. Inspiration from kwyjibo. Still in raw ally at the moment. Will coat it black when I get some time.

That's cool! Any chance of some closer pics of how it mounts/bolts down when you get a chance?
I would love to do something similar in the future :)

Yeh I like how its turned out. Will soon See how it goes with a tent on it!

I don't have any handy sorry. But just drilled 4 new holes through the top of the tub, and fixed a bolt and washer through. Solid as a rock!
