new Rhino Aero bars on track mount whistle. Any fixes?

Postby AussieAnth on Tue Feb 10, 2015 11:21 am

Not long installed a track mounted Rhino track mount system with 2 x Aero bars (the flat oval shaped ones).

I find that above 70kph, I get a reasonably loud whistling, kind like someone blowing over a beer bottle, but a bit more high pitched. Seems to change a bit depending on my speed & wind direction.

I've installed the 3 pieces of textured rubber that sit in the channel on top of each cross bar. Have found there are small gaps at each end as they dont fully cover the entire cross bar.

I installed the 4 x rubber strips with the 30cm ruler etched into them that are supposed to sit in the exposed channel. Lost one on the first drive as they are so loose, and have since taped the entire channel except for the channel behind the rear cross bar. Bit of an improvement, but still whistles.

So whats next? I'll tape up the remaining exposed channel, and maybe gaffa tape up underneath the cross bars and any other gaps.

Anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

Remove one of the tracks and move the other back and forward a bit till the whistle is minimal, then do the other.
Mine still whistle. Way to many voids and sharp edges on the legs to make them completely silent. The grooves in the bottom profile of the cross bar wont help either.
I just remove mine when not in use.

yep, as above

just move them back/forward a bit at a time till it is reduced to an acceptable level.

mine are the HD bars & they are worse. I just put rubber strip top & bottom as well.

Do you leave them on all of the time ? If you only have them on when you need them, with the other gear on the roof racks the noise will be gone.
If you always leave a surf board up there you won't hear it & it will look cool.
But as above try moving them, make sure the rubber is pulled all the way to the ends.
