How to mount Ironman Underbody Protection

Postby buffhunt on Sat Aug 08, 2015 12:29 pm

Well, this weekend is supposed to be the big one where I finally fit the Ironman Underbody kit to my MN. 1 1/2 hours in and we are at a halt. I can't see any way to follow the instructions they provided and use the 2 threaded insert plates to mount the rear to the crossbar. Has any one else fitted this successfully to an MN?
UPDATE! - This has obviously been a fantastic [censored] by Ironman 4x4. When I checked out the other plate for the fuel tank, it is obviously another Front Engine Plate. Has a similar Part number of IUP010E 1A as opposed to IUP010E 1 & 1UP010E 2 which are the Engine Plates. Just to make the weekend better Ironman aren't open Saturday & Sunday. I'd waited 5 weeks for this weekend off from work to do this. To say I am angry is putting it mildly.

Does the plate say to connect it to the gearbox support crossmember? Like so? This one isn't an ironman one but thought it might have a similar mounting system.

Hi thanks for the photos. You are correct in that it says connect it to the gearbox crossmember, however in my case the mounting holes in the plate line up with the center of the crossmember and there are two threaded plates which the bolts are supposed to screw into and somehow attach to the crossmember. I've contacted Ironman and am waiting for their response.

Sometimes the flat bars are used as clamps. This picture will give you an idea:

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Ok between the two sets of photos, I'm now getting the drift, I will have to check and see if this will work. It looks like I might have to learn how to post pics as well. ;) Thanks to all for the replies and help.

So here goes. An attempt to show what is going on.

It is the front crossbar that I have to mount to first. This one.

I have to use these to hold the plate to this somehow.

As per these instructions;

This is the full plate set.

Hope that makes my problem a bit clearer. :)

To me it looks like you're supposed to use those flat bars like clamps. You attach them to the plate loosely, then stick the flat bar over the cross member and then tightening the bolt will bring the plate up against the bottom of the cross member and the flat bar will pull tight on the top. Hard to tell from the little pics but that's how I read it.

I thought that initially, but the bolts aren't long enough to cover that distance. My next thought was the holes in the plate line up with two holes in the crossmember, so maybe put the plates inside the crossmember, which would work, however there are fittings through the crossmember that stop the plates before the threaded holes line up with the crossmember holes. :? :(

Ah yeah 30mm bolts. Hmm. So there are holes that line up, but you can't get the inserts to the top of the holes?

Well, I've spoken with Ironman this morning. The result is that they have a record of it having been raised as an issue previously. They would like me to see if I can make it all fit and then give them input as to what I did so they can list it as a "fix" for future reference. :?

I'm having a big think about how this might happen. :D I was wondering why such a full kit only cost $394.00

I'll probably take it into the local agent here and work with them on it. I'm working away from home for a few months so I don't have my full shed and tools available to me. :(

So today, I finally got around to mounting the final plate (Transmission Plate) of the Ironman Underbody Protection. Why so long? Work for one thing. But it turned out I had hit a rock hard on the front right hand chassis mounting point and bent it, so I had to get that replaced. Anyhow now they are on and for $394 I'm bloody happy. As a hint for anyone else thinking of this, the two flat plates are what you use to mount the rear engine plate and front of the transmission plate. They have to be worked in past a bit of an angle. I first thought they were two long, but they do go. You don't need the two U brackets that come with the transmission plate kit.

thank you for posting that info, you brought an end to a very head scratching hour for me as to how on earth those u brackets were in anyway meant to be used as well as the flat plate that goes in the cross member

You're welcome. I consider myself reasonably savvy when it comes to drawings and instructions, but those ones had me stalled for a while.

Don't worry I used to write technical procedures for a living and that left me stumped on how on earth that would be a good idea to use them

Looking at getting some of these ironman underbody protection plates, any chance of getting an update on them?
