Fixed Roof rack/roof cage options for ml/mn

Postby Gav84P on Wed Nov 16, 2016 8:07 am

So i have searched and read many posts in relations to roof racks and roof cages and essentially its the same roof racks / cages oVer and over. So i have a ml dual cab and i want a fixed rack or heavy duty racks but i cant see why after 10yrs that they are still up the $600 mark for the roof rack with tracks and even more for a cage.

Has anyone found a cheaper alterantive apart from the clip ones?

Have you looked at 4wd supacentre? They have a few options that may be more in your budget range.
Yes... I'll have another beer.

I recently looked for something similar but have had no luck.I looked at the 4wd supacentre stuff however its all gu patrol gutter mount style. Was thinking of adding some racks to the hard lid (as some others have done) as would be a cheaper option but haven't gone any further yet.

Yeah most of the 4wd supacentre is gutter mount or universal. Was just hoping someone had come across a cheaper option as i think its ridiculous that a triton rack will cost me 3x more than my prado full length rack.

This is my roof rack. Got an old 100 series cruiser rack from a mate for a case of beer. Then made up rail system to sit at the back of the tub. The rack is bolted to the back tub rails, and then also bolted to the cabin bar. Works a treat, and is super strong. Set me back a little over $100 (including beer) and about a days worth of work.

Get on gumtree and see what you can find. Always cheaper options out there. So far i have got the follwing for much cheaper with a bit of looking around

ARB Delux winch bar: Total $950
Warn WInch XD9000: $150 from a mate
Rock sliders: $350 for the pair
Roof Rack: $100

How strong a rack do you need? I got a aluminum one off eBay. Came in a flat pack. Apparently can hold 100kg evenly spread. See it in my build thread viewtopic.php?f=51&t=19616&p=522808#p522808

Have had it on my hard lid and on my ladder rack setup.

I wouldn't hold a hilift jack off the side but its great with a roof top bag for carrying suitcases etc.

Repco had one on special last month less 20%, Prorack $261 with mounting kit for my ML. Two types of bars to choose from, square or aero. The fitting kit is $45 and is model specific. If you change cars just buy another fitting kit for that new car and reuse the bar and supports. The aluminium baskets are around $99 on e bay and some of them have minor imperfection (they hold about 75kg.). I bought this combination and altho' noisy on the road are good value and will do the job for a specific trip or whatever.

Im trying to avoid the clip on ones as ive never had good experiences with them along with mates as they can move and eventually end up causing damage to the door frame

Unfortunately it will cost you a bomb then. Unless you want to do it yourself. I've read posts of others here doing that successfully.

Here's another thread that might help

I was in the same boat, I searched high and low for info. looked at the Chinese ones but heard bad reviews about them and not fitting correctly. My wife ended up finding one on Gumtree, a rhino rack & legs from a triton, I just had to buy a fitting kit.

Rough off road work will shake them loose, they are not recommended for that.
