Transmission bash plate - who's got em? At $150 I'm tempted

Postby AussieAnth on Wed Feb 08, 2017 9:50 pm

Most of us have the 1st and 2nd bash plates, protecting the front and diff sections. But what about the 3rd plate that protects the transmission?

Now the MQ is getting more popular and options for accessories are growing, it seems some of the MN accessoriess are getting cheaper.

On eBay you can pick up a 3mm mild steel transmission bash plate delviered for $150 or in stainless for $250. Its quite a long bash plate too, so it would cover a fair chunk of the under body.

What are people's opinions or experiences? I'm a bit tempted......
While I'm on the topic, anyone make a fuel tank bash plate? Is it just me or does the factory protection seem a bit light on?

I have one, I bought as a set of three from Boo's.

Fitted just prior to a visit to Moreton Island and had no dramas at all, easy enough to install and the mounts have been fine so far.

The diff plate seemed like it copped a bit of a flogging but I'm not sure the transmission plate was necessary though, but for $275 delivered for all three, it was no big deal.

What I did notice was that it collected half the beach on top and I carted it all home with me :-)

I've been a bit hesitant to fitting one, I remember being on Fraser on inland tracks with a Suzuki jimny that I'd put a bash plate on (stock suspension and tyres) and it dragged alot causing alot of sand to become stuck between the transmission and the bash plate. It heated up enough to give off a concerning burning smell, ended up having to lie under the car in the sand and mud to take it off after that...Not a pleasant experience.

One thing that most people don't realise is that full length (including transmission/transfer case) bash plates will make a noticeable improvement to fuel economy.

This is my Pajero, but you can see how smooth it is underneath and that means less air resistance.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Interesting point Chris. I wouldn't have thought it would make that much of a difference.

At $150 I might give it a go I think. The ones I'm looking at from Custom Offroad Accessories have a few wide holes along the body of the plate so it should help clear crap out of it.

Hi Aussieanth,
Like Chris, I also have full set of the bushskinz bash plates, bought mine 2nd hand at a fair price, bit of a pain to install by yourself as they weight bout 20kg, easy if you have a helping hand though, I thought the more protection underneath the better, saves smashing the transfer case. :D

My trans plate is a boo bash plate I think it was $115 delivered.

I think it needs a couple of holes in it to let sand etc.. out as it was chocker block full after I did a robe trip

I was thinking that too Sav... but where to drill hmmm?
You could follow a trail of sand from a few blocks away, right into my driveway

Definately needs to be dropped and cleaned as a matter of priority after a beach trip, which you should be doing anyway I suppose.

I pulled the trigger on the more expensive stainless steel transmisison plate for $250 delivered from Custom Offroad 4x4, then saw the last post about Boo's plates. Just checked out his website...$115 delivered for pre-painted mild steel. Hard to beat that! I think you're right though Sav, it does look like it would fill up with crap easily. Great price though. Little bit of drilling & jigsaw to make a few of holes out and it should be much easier to clean without compromising the strength.

The one I've ordered has a few large holes to clear out crap. Hopefully its worth the extra money in the long run.
