Cyclone style snorkel head?

Postby TheSheepKed on Tue Feb 06, 2018 10:50 am

Thoughts on whether this would be possible/appropriate to install one of the mushroom/cyclonic styled snorkel heads onto the MN Triton snorkel?
Anyone tried it?

I imagine that you wouldn't get as many leaves and bigger crap sucked in, but where does the dust go?

My understanding is that the dust gets centrifuged out and essentially back into the air, thus there is no need to clean the head at any point as it auto cleans unlike some of the other mushroom types (transparent ones) which require you to clean it out.
More curious to know whether this will affect performance e.g. air intake.

It's only $45 so throw it on and try it out, what could go wrong :D
Water and dust particle filters are nothing new for turbo prop engines, there is a slight loss of power though, but very slight.

Haha well what could go wrong?
I found one for a lot cheaper so I'm going to give it a go but just wanted to see if anyone had tried it. Dont want to do any damage to my engine/car over something like this. Wanted some opinions first.

Some-ones gotta be the first, worst case is it doesn't do what it claims ;) , I doubt you will do any damage by giving it a try.

Not if you leave the oem filter in anyway.

Just be aware the cyclone is a prefilter, not a replacement, is the gist.

As in not a replacement for the fabric air filter that sits in the airbox?

My plan was to just take the ram air head off and replace it with the cyclone head. Surely that's what you're supposed to do? And leave everything else in place.

Correct. Should keep your air filter cleaner for longer.

Some of the round filter housings try and perform this function within the air cleaner.

I find it amazing how bugs and stuff find their way into the air box with the standard air intake.

Ah ok. Well I've ordered it and I'll see how it goes. Should I be concerned about air intake? I don't want to starve my engine of air.
And how about water crossings? Should still perform the same right?

Snorkel is not for river crossings, if you are concerned about that fit diff breathers. Snorkel is for cleaner / cooler air intake.

Ha! Tell that to my bank manager after the $5K engine rebuild cost on the MK which took a big drink of water because it didn't have a snorkel.

I do agree with the pre-cleaner concept though. The less dust and crap that makes it even to the face of the filter, the better. It would be nice to see some actual evidence of how well these things work, but they can't be any worse than the 1cm grille on the standard snorkel head.

Whilst I agree that you need diff breathers for river crossings, I wouldn't take a stock standard car with diff breathers through a river without a snorkel as well.

Anyway back to the point of my thread, I will post some pictures up of it when it arrives.
I think it'll work a bit better for dust but hopefully no change to air intake. They aren't new things and the tech has been around for a while.
They look pretty neat too.

Main thing re the air intake is that all the connections are water/dust proof.

Re playing submarine, the electrickery will probably be inundated by water somewhere.

Seems Mr Dyson has made plenty of $'s from a cyclone, oh and I'm not recommending you bolt a dyson on the snorkel (but if you did please take a pic :-) )

Had one of these on my VDJ79r cruiser seems to work well enough just no need for the plastic pre-cleaner to collect the dirt as these heads tend to throw the dust out due to the centrifugal force it creates' cant do any harm so it's a good thing.

Well I've driven it for a couple hundred Kms so far and it drives the same, touch wood. Bit noisier when you're accelerating hard, but otherwise normal.
I figured if all those 70 series have them, then it can't be all that bad. I like the look of them too. Don't see too many utes, let alone Tritons, with them on.

Lots of heavy earth moving equipment has "cyclone" pre cleaners.
Some mine 4wd do as well.

Digging up an old post ;) Had this on my MN then on the Cruiser now on the MQ :D this thing gets around, thats cause it does such a good job.
Just make sure you drill a 1mm hole in the bowl to let the water out when it rains ;)

We used to use Donaldson pre cleaners on farm machinery. Amazing how much they trap dust.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.
