project- sliders/steps-work in progress

Guys, been wanting to start on these since the get go and i finally got some time today.I already riped off my steps and rear bar a while ago, and i wanted to replace them with stainless steel steps and sliders.Once ive got it all done i'll neaten everything up and turn it into an article if anyone wants to go down the same path. So here we go.

heres the mounting brackets- theyre 40x5mm stainless angle-ive chamfered off the corner to get a flush fit against the existing body mounts

this is the 'step' part of the fabrication- ive used 76.0mm stainless tube for this. i've had my company logo laser marked on the tube for some subtle advertising. bad part of this is the laser marking can only handle 800mm long so i had to join and repolish the tube- thats a time killer.

this is a close up of the laser marking- when finished the logo will be to the front side of the rear wheel arch.

this is the 'slider' part of the job. its 50mm stainless. ive mitred the cuts so theres no snag point on the front.

Heres the sliders with the ends capped off and the mounts trial fitted.i've left it tonight with the step temp mounted along side the slider. hopfully i can get this tacked up tomorrow

Hey cyberhonky,
To get your pics to work you have to do this,

an "i" needs to be put before mg in the first lot of brackets.

For each image.

Nice work so far mate - and you are pretty handy with the metalwork it seems!!

Are you likely to be in a position to make more than one set?! ;)

Cheers

Very nice job.
shame your shameless advertising photo cut the business name ;)

I too would be interested, dont know the additional work required but I've always wanted the step part to look like the Navaras steps (round tube with cutouts for the tread plate)

you'd almost think i did it for a job 8-) almost

to the guys that are asking- yeh i'd have no problem making up more sets- i just can say 'yes' at the moment. reasons being, i havent finished them so i dont know of any upcoming problems- ive still to see if there's any issues with jacking points etc- and i dont know if these things are going to whistle or not.

time will tell is suppose ;)

edit- oh, and i dont even know how much these things cost yet!

Are these going to use the mounts on the body that the factory steps were mounted to?

I dont know how strong the factory mounts on the body will be. Personally I think they will be too weak to be able to cope with rock sliding duties.

All rock sliders I have seen have been attached to the chassis in three or four points. The brackets being either, welded to or clamped around the chassis.

yep they're on the factory mounts- and i'd say you're right about the mounts being too weak for rock sliding duties.these are a replacement for the POS factory steps, and will be more than suitable for the times when i belly out offroad.my intention was that they were solid and smooth underneath (no snagging points), that they were significantly stronger than factory, and that they had a decent step as well (the kids need something to get in) which i think ive accomplished them all.

If my intentions were for a purpose built rock slider the approach would've been significantly different and i dont think i would've bought a 50k triton for that.:)

i've actually finished and mounted them so as soon as the image upload facility works for me i'll get the pics up.

Alright- here’s yesterday afternoon’s effort.

This is the tack up of the finished unit

Here’s the underneath view after welding and pickling (pickling paste bleaches the heat marks and removes burnt gas etc)

Heres the passenger side ready for fit up

A while later this is the finished job

Heres a closer view of this finished job. I’ve ended up with the bottom face of the ‘slider’ about 30mm lower than the bottom of the sill (I needed 25mm min to allow for the tube bracket holding the step+ some clearance so there’s no contact). This bottom face is the lowest part of the assembly so I’ve improved on clearance over the factory steps (not difficult really) and the whole job is 30mm less clearance than having no step at all.

looks like your ready for the orders judging on the amount of pipe in the background 8-)

Thay do look good, dont take this the wrong way BUT I think they look a bit long? Without being attached to the chassis you couldn't use them for jacking the vehicle, and without some sort of tread plate for the top people using them for steps will/ might slip.

could do something like this

which is still the round tube but with checkerplate step inserts for grip on the top?

Like the workmanship, take a full photo of your business name laser etched, good work needs to be rewarded.

BTW where are you from, town?

Cheers

lol- i was waiting for someone to pickup on the tube in the background- the reason for the long length was from driving over fallen trees and seeing where the scuff marks were- i went for as long as possible. as for slipping- ive yet to get to clark rubber etc for a strip of that self adhesive sandpaper type stuff to put along the top side- that should stop the slip.

as for the logo- maybe some other time (i'm here for fun- not to flog my business)- but if anyone needs some help with enginnering work repairs etc i'll try to help them out (send me a PM) i'm located in bayswater Vic
