Rock Sliders

Postby Joe on Tue Apr 13, 2010 7:18 am

Does anybody know of rock sliders that double as steps?

ARB, TJM and Ironman steps are stonger than the OEM steps but not as strong as true rock sliders. With the 2 inch lift, the missus needs me to keep the steps so she can get in, but I don't want to get the aforementioned if they are going to bend on my first major bush bash.

Any suggestions?

custom, most sliders are custom jobies,

I have priced up rock sliders in the past that look like the MN triton steps- adds about $200 to the job.

IMHO they would look very nice and do a great job.

The step inserts would be checkerplate with the round "slider" tube being slightly larger diameter than the usual choice in slider.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the diff between rock sliders and side steps?
I assume rock sliders stop damage to your sills, but where do they attach, and how much damage will they take?

See my shed for some photos of the custom slider steps I had made by Hazzard Engineering.
There is a topic on the subject as well.

Damn, dude! Those things are brilliant!
So, the idea is they take the knocks of the vehicle from the sides, and the weight of the vehicle from underneath if you hit a rock, etc? Literally, slide over obstructions?
How much where those set, and who makes em? Seriously interested.
I crumpled the passenger sill on my old Frontera running off the driveway and hitting a garden rock while backing my caravan. Only rock in the bloody garden ;) Annoyed the shit outa me doing that. Don't wanna damage the new vehicle doing something so asinine ;)

The idea with this design is that the kids (and me - I am a shortarse) can stand on the steps to get in the car. The "slider" part comes from the fact that they are smooth underneath and will slide over rocks rather than getting snagged on them.
Hazzard Engineering made them for me.
Their website is www.wasp4x4.com.au.
The guy I dealt with (Glen I think) is very helpful and a fantastic tradesman.

Pretty sure Homer has them. I think there was a group buy on them so if you find that thread there should be some more pics.

I got them to fit up- just because it was easier to pick up from the factory than to post
took 30mins

they have made quite a few sets so know the dimensions so it is a easy fitup.

everyone that has had the AVA sliders has been happy

I didn't get them in the group buy, but apart from being heavy they are fairly easy to install, the passenger side was a bit challenging with the fuel lines but you just need double jointed fingers, wrist, and elbows. Can't remember for sure but I think I used a hydraulic jack as the brackets fit pretty tight.

Mine are a bit different to Hymie's. I got the 'weekend worrier' i think. Slide plate under, no top plate. Installed with a mate, had them on in just over an hour.

I would definitely go with the under plate - it is a must have if you ask me. I reckon you could add that to the order without stuffing up manufacturing ;)

The bottom plate stops branches and sticks and rakes  jamming up through the sliders and busting through your top plate...it happens.

I would also go with the flattened top bar sections for standing on like 4WD26 has if they don't cost a bomb...but get the bottom plates for sure...did I say that already?

Just call them and ask how much for the bottom plate mate ;) they can whack them on easily.

Honestly out of maybe 8 guys with these superb sliders and only 3 or 4 regularly on here - you got three replies saying GET THE BOTTOM PLATES ;)

And that wasn't from people justifying their purchase...that is from people who after bashing around realised they should have GOTTEN THE BOTTOM PLATES

That's what forums are for mate :D

Either that or go naked
Without the bottom plate sticks get trapped in the support bars

Naked I have not gotten a sick caught ever- lucky maybe?

Just don't get the top only as sticks punch out the alloy or get stuck

These are mine. Made them out of gal and folded plate:

I haven't had any trouble with sticks getting caught up on the underside and the 4x4 has dropped down on them a handful of times now without any signs on bending. My last trip I slid the whole drivers side along a rock ledge whilst trying to get the rear tyre back on the ground (typical MN long arse troubles) and only damage was paint removal.

Went with box section because I have to stand up on them daily to put x2 kids in carseats in the back. My last 4x4 had tube with flat on the top and I slipped on the outer lip often.

My rear bar is thick walled tube and also cops its fair share of knocks. Which is better, I cant tell. Built strong enough, they will both do well IMO.

If you are shopping for an off the shelf item, try and find something that runs the entire length of the cab and as far back as possible. There is a Triton is town running MCC or TJM (cant remember which) and they look a bit too short IMO.

He's onto a good product with the rocksliders mate ;) once they're on you don't even look at what you land or slide on, just bash your way across it :)

As said though with all sliders...top plate only will punch branches through the top plate ripping it off the slider.

It has happened in three places on mine, been repaired once and now is just let go all bent and sharp because I'm lazy and it happens so regularly - particularly if you go anywhere near Coffs Harbour

Hmm....maybe the fold in the tred plate gives enough strength to stop the branches from punching through.....or I am just lucky.

Must be a decent branch/log to push through 4mm plate!

I have a different brand but have only ever got caught on sticks a couple of times. I haven't had my top plate damaged as yet but having seen Homer's I can see why he is animated about it. They look like he drove over a star picket doing 60 :o

I haves the AVA ones from the group buy and only got the top plate fitted and on my last outing, a rock or stick got caught up under the plate and lifted it and broke the rivets off  but no damage was done, just lifted the plate slightly :o Now thinking of fitting a bottom plate to the sliders so it won't happen again
