Thank you but the wheels may have to come off again yet :(

Tyre fitter is claiming that they aren't straight and he can't get them balanced correctly. 2 goes so far..

An on vehicle balancer could fix the problem.

Don't think we have one of those in Townsville. Normally the guys I use here are pretty good but this set seems to have their measure so far. Very disappointed, these were supposed to be an exciting upgrade. Really don't like the look of the standard alloys :(

Mind you in saying that we're heading for Sydney next week, is it worth limping into Brisneyland?
The car does 100km/hr ok but 104+ is no good at all, steering wheel shakes itself out of my hands.

Try one of the dealers that sell a lot of truck tyres. They will probably have one.

Or you could search on finger balancing. There's been a few posts before about the problems of balancing steelies, it seems pretty common strangely enough.

Why don't you just get the alloys powder coated black, I think that would look the goods then ;)

Townsville Tax, that's not a cheap option with only 2 powder coaters in town, particularly when both do mining work.

I had the same problem and it annoyed the crap out of me. This is how I fixed it

Get the tyre place to do a finger balance instead of a centre balance. They hate doing it because it is a PITA, but it will make a difference. Steel wheels are not made to run be run hub-centric but lug-centric so they should be balanced on the lugs, not on the centre.

Once you are back at home after the balance has been done jack up each wheel loosen it off and then re-tighten using this method:-
  • Hand tighten the first nut making sure it is at the top.
  • Spin the wheel so that the bottom nut is now at the top and hand tighten.
  • Keep going around like this always making sure that the one you are tightening is at the top.
  • Progressively tighten up the nuts again making sure that the one you are tightening is at the top.

When I first had my sunnies on I had a wobble at about 90kph and since I used the above method I no longer have any vibration at all at any speed.

Thanks Joe,
I did read that yesterday.

Well third time seems to be a charm ;) Took it back this morning for the third go at balancing and now I can get up to *ahem* legal *ahem* overtaking speeds without the steering wheel wanting to go ape YAY!

Good result killa. Would be a shame to have to ditch the steelies when they looks so good 8-)

Ok so some Challenger specific pics for the Scott's Rods 3" system 8-)
Installed this morning as mentioned in the Group Buy thread. Took just over 2 hours, no real dramas.

Unwrapped product from Scott's Rods

Started at the dump pipe by removing the splash covers then the 3 bolts holding the dump pipe on. The top and engine side are actually lock nuts on studs, as you can see my studs came out with the nuts.

With the old exhaust out I lay them side by side for comparison. Also changed over the rubber hangers while they were there so that I got them all in the right spot.

When installing the new dump pipe and cat, this is the most important bolt. The top 3 were installed loosely (3mm gap) whilst this one was jiggled into place and tightened. When the top 3 were tightened first I couldn't get this one even close to the mount.

Big thank you to Tony, Fez and Scott's Rods for organising the Group Buy.

Looks good Cal. Notice any difference in driving?

Yes, it's definitely breathing easier. Biggest improvement is definitely top end but we did a lazy cruise into town last night and I noticed that it doesn't labour so much. If I'm one gear too high and accelerate it will pick up a lot easier with a lot less shuddering.

Haha, I did think about the first option ;)

Problem is that I'm driving 700km tomorrow (one way) for work. I ended up going the dodgy yet effective mild steel job from Bunnings, it will get me there. Hopefully I can get the correct bolt and nut sorted before the trip home.

Anyone know what the correct torque is for these bolts?
