Challenger Fuel Economy (PB 2012)

Postby Anthony Campbell on Sat Mar 01, 2014 1:14 pm

Hi,

I have a 2012 PB Challenger in Manual and average 9.4L/100ks. Now while i think it is brilliant coming from a 4runner with a V6 commodore engine in it averaging 18l/100 a work colleague has a 2012 triton glx that averages 8.2l/100ks.

He also is not mechanically minded and does not drive it to achieve any sort of fuel economy. Where i drive quiet economical.

Why is that? I know that the challenger might be a little heaver but not 100ks a tank of the same fuel qty...

Also doesnt anyone else notice that fuel economy is worse when using cruise control?

Cheers

Anthony

cruise control fights the egr and can "hunt".
and sometimes it can be just one of those things... and calculate it at the pump, not using the computer (random number generator)

Yep already do that calculate at the pump and put in the calculator.

I also have the egr blocked.

hmmm.. its prob what your going to get honestly... its quoted at 9.1? most trucks economy are a fraction over the claimed economy figures anyway imo... so i'd reckon thats what you'll get. unless others have any ideas?

Best I ever got on the hwy was 10.6. Challenger does have an extra 400kg to drag around though...

Straight out blanking the EGR off adds to the fuel usage problem as changes the air fuel ratio under some conditions and also significantly raises the exhaust gas temperatures. Especially with the variable geometry turbo as PB Challenger has. Not really a good idea these days as there is a much better way of dealing with the carbon issue.

Pull the blank plate, do a fuel test and it will probably be similar to your mates MN which I assume is not blanked..

In saying the above, anything under 10/100 is pretty easy to live with for a 4X4. 8-)

Tony, what is the much better way of dealing with the carbon issue than using a blanking plate?

I dont want to start here as we already have enough EGR threads and I've recently noticed an ET thread too.

Fuel economy varies dramatically depending on the type of driving.
The last tank in my PB Challanger showed the following figures: 643KM 52L @ 8.08 L/100. This was all gentle around town work.
At 110kph with A/C on I get about 10L/100

You need to compare apples with apples etc.

Cheers

Yes, more fuel as it accelerates harder than you would to maintain speed up a hill and cant lift off as soon because it cant anticipate the crest as you can or other reason to slow down...

My 2011 with SPV mod best figures have been 11.2/100 normally its 12.5. Have never run it that far I needed to fill more then 60L but quite disappointing to have never been able to get at least 500km out of (nearly) a tank.

Also notice a bit of surging recently but car has only done 47000k's but missus does alot of short trips in it and SPV mod only been on the car for about 1 month. Carbon?

Amazing to see claims of under 7L/100 I'm jealous!

Claims under 7? Sorry mate, I'm disinclined to disbelieve it.... MMALS technology won't stretch that far. Stock Amarok or dmax maybe....

Carbon or a SCV issue. I had the manifolds replaced on my 2010 LS auto a couple of weeks ago at 108,000km. The only symptom I had was surging between 60 and 90 kph, no excess fuel use. My long term average up till the manifold replacement was 10.8L/100 (18,000ks, 17,000ks around town). After driving it home I installed the SPV mod and the two tanks since have been 10.0-10.1L/100. The RV meter has been reporting as low as 8.2L/100 on the freeway, but it seems to be even less accurate now than it was before.

Did notice a little bit of surging again yesterday so mine might be SCV related as well as the carbon build up.

Hi,
We have a 2012 4x2 auto Challenger bought new in 2013 which is mostly used by my wife as a shopping trolley and has recently had the 30,000k service at a cost of $898.40 and included a clean of the inlet manifold and EGR valve. The car had started to use more fuel and performance was down a little so I suspected it was carboning up a little so after the service I fitted a blanking plate and provent 200 catch can to prevent having an extra $300 added to our annual services in the future. We have just returned from a 1400k. round trip where we used the cruise control most of the time and used 8.6l /100k which could have been less if we drove without the cruise on.
