I had the same thought 5 mins ago.

They would fit I reckon, but a tyre dealer would not be happy about putting them on so I may stick with 285/70s. I still have a while to make up my mind/

Apart from the scratch I am not to worried. Everything will loosen up, realign and/or pop back into place so there should be no cost

Good to hear it is getting used
Some good advice regarding bash plates as a first up investment
Glad the damage bill won't be to high
But every time you venture out your modification bill (wants) will increase

Cannot wait for the new look with tyres....,,

Random question time

Can anyone give me the measurment of thedistance from the bottom of the rim to the bottom of the flare on a standard Challenger with 17" wheels. I am also after the same measurement for your lifted Challenger on 17s though I will need to know what size/type of lift you have installed

I forgot to take this measurement before I put my Ironman gear on and now I really wanna see how much of a gain in ride height I have acheived. I don't think I gained a lot after I put the 2nd battery winch and bar on as the springs may be too soft - rated from 80-120kg. I am looking at getting some stiffer/heavier ones as I am trying to avoid coil spacers.

Cheers
Nick

You're better off comparing measurements from centre of the rim to the flare so that you take out differences in tyre sizes in the comparisons.

Measuring from the centre or the bottom of the rim is the same deal as neither will consider the the size of the tyre - they are both fixed points from the hub. The only thing I need to know when getting those measurements from forumites is the size lift and rims they are running different to 17s

Thanks mate - I am assuminmg yours is a 50mm lift

I just measured mine with the 50mm lift and I get 775mm from bottom of rim to bottom of flare.

So maybe I just have to toughen up or maybe the 2 other similar Challengers in my town have got 3" of lift. I may have to pay closer attention to them next time I see them

Has anyone else got any measurements?

As I am getting tyres in a fortnight or so I thought it best to start some proper research

As you are all aware the original size for a 17" Challenger is 265/65 R17. According to the tyre placard it can either be S (180kph) of H (210kph) speed rated.

All of the tyres I am interested in all have a Q rating which is only good for 160kph. From my old days in the commodore scene you could buy 'special' tyre placards which would change the load rating and diameter so you could fit your 19s on your VL Turbo and still be at first glance legal.

So is there something like that the Mitsubishi boys do? Or are you running the risk of no insurance payout as a worst case scenario if your insurer finds out that your tyres aren't correctly rated.

All the tyres below have an rating of Q apart from the Hankook which you can get in Q and R

Maxxis MT764 BigHorn (new pattern)
Bridgestone D674 Dueler MT
Hankook RT03 Dyanpro MT
Dick Cepek Mud Country
BFG KM2s
Achilles X-MT Desert Hawk

EDIT - I hve just had a look at some ATs and BFG's have an R rating which still isn't good enough. The Bridgestone ATs did however have an S rating which will suffice.

This may severly limit the tyres I am going to be able to put onto Paddy....................

Does anyone know of an MT that comes in 265/70 R17 with an S or above rating?

I haven't looked if different sizes have different ratings as I was only interested in 265/70 R17s

there is a out in the ANCAP regarding 4x4 speed ratings and not needing to be followed
BUT the load rating must be followed

so the speed rating is not applicable in this circumstance, think they must meet 160, and all tyres meet that minimum, but please do your own research to confirm

hi m8 it is the number infront of the Q rating that u need to take note on the 17 have a 112Q
like this
265/70 X 17 118Q
just as long as the tyres meet this 112Q or better you are sweet as well as the other ones but this one i have been picked up on by the boys in blue..
Read this First ;) ;)Then still cant find what you are after
Use this Second ;) ;)Then still no Joy Go Here
Look in this thread 8-) 8-)

Phew - thanks for the info. I have looked at NCOP and RMS info and they clearly state that if the tyre is featured for specific 4x4 uses (I have assumed that is LT designation) than all it has to do is have a speed rating of N or better.

This is one link

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roa ... 9-rev4.pdf

And here is the other

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads ... 1%20v3.pdf

I will ring or email the RMS techincal advice line later to confirm the speed rating issue but at least the load rating of the tyres I am looking at are all good.

I have confirmed with RMS that the load rating is the key...............so phew!

Having checked that off I narrowed down the tyre choice to 2, both sized 265/70R17

Maxxis Bighorn 764 at $280 per corner (they were price matched to that figure by KTAS down from $379........WOW)

and

Achilles Desert Hawk XMT at $250 per corner

I would really like to try the XMTs but I think I will stick with the Maxxis. What do you guys think?

I can't comment on the maxxis 764's but I've run 2 sets now of the 762’s and am impressed with the km's I'm able to get out of them. Best check in the tyre thread and search for comments on the Achilles ;)
