any ideas on what could be causing this gearbox fault

Postby oweywest on Sun Feb 01, 2015 5:39 pm

i currently have a 2001 v6 challenger with the 4spd auto, up until thursday the gearbox changed gears beautifully. Then without any warning every time it changes between 3rd and 4th it bangs before engaging the gear, it also does this when going from 4th to 3rd. 1st and 2nd gears are still fine. I have looked through forums and could not find anything similar to this this problem.
has anyone else experienced this and is it a expensive fix.

cheers

Obvious question first.. has the auto been serviced when due?

Or if it hasn't been serviced for a while, is the level of fluid correct?? Low level ATF fluid can produce clunking type noises ;)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

Perhaps the 'learning auto' requires a reset?

It's always hard to diagnose remotely ;)

To me, it sounds like a clutch or valve body issue. The thing to remember with autos, is that the longer you drive them with a problem, the more expensive they can be to fix. This is due to the fact that you can damage the "hard" components (drums, shafts, etc), and worst, the casing.

Take it to an auto specialist ASAP.

Sounds similar to a problem I was having with the missus frontera. Ended up being a busted solenoid in the box. As said, get it to an auto tranny specialist ASAP

cheers for the responses. i'm going to take it down to the transmission shop this morning to try and sus the problem out.
The gearbox had a service about six months ago and the colour and level is still perfect. The sensation the car gives almost makes me question whether the gearbox isn't getting an electical signal when changing, as it feels as though it is cutting out. possibly a solonoid?
