Metal in the diff.

Postby Banjo16 on Thu Aug 25, 2016 2:50 pm

Just had the 60000km service done on my PB Challenger and was told they found metal in the diff oil(rear) when it was changed. Not sure what sort ie fine or larger.

Bottom line is diff comes out next week for inspection, there has been no noise so maybe nothing, dealer says it will be up to MMA whether or not it's replaced.

Not happy but at least it's under warranty.

Good that it's under warranty, at least now it's logged and if nothing gets changed now you will have a case later down the road.

Keep updated on results

Wear metal is normal. That is why I always drop the diff oil at 1500kms from new. Gets rid of the bulk of it early.

My diff clunks like crazy, I think they will find a few chunks of metal in mine when its serviced. If it lasts that long... Maybe I should put some in they might fix the problem, I can turn the radio down:lol:

Had a mate that drained his diff oil and forgot the next morning to put oil back in. He drove to the local shop and back about 20k. The diff was fine. He believes the Nulon Teflon product he previously added saved his diff.

Teflon is smoother then oil, allot more heat tolerant and does not degrade by contaminants like oil. Teflon as an oil additive is shot down but one can only ponder.

Would like someone else to advise me on when the rear diff oil should be changed? On my reading of the service manual it's first @ 90000k. If so I wonder why mine was done @ 60000k ?

I thought mine was 45,000 and 90,000. Not sure if it varies across different year models though.

According to the service manual, the frequency of oil change should be doubled for arduous conditions (whatever you define as arduous).

I change the diff, gearbox and transfer case oils every 20000kms. More than what the owners manual states but the diff oil is clean with very little wear metal on the magnetic plug. Probably overkill but worth the peace of mind.

Quick update, the new dif is yet to arrive. Checked with the service dept today & apparently it's on back order, with a VOR notice which means the vehicle is off road.
It's a good thing it's not off road or stuck in the middle of nowhere,it's been a week so I assume it's on a boat from somewhere.

This is starting to sound like a fawlty towers episode, there are no diffs in Aus,are now waiting on one to be airfreighted from Japan.
On the upside at least the truck is still driving ok even though the dealer told MMA it was off the road.

Well , guess who's pissed off.
Challenger went in for the 75k service today and I mentioned a noise in the rear on reversing.
Service Manager met me at the door and said I don't like your diff????? ,turns out there is metal bits in the oil & diff is possibly f***ed.
He did ask if I did a lot of 4wd or used the rear diff lock a lot !!!!! So what not recently, in fact this replacement has had no 4 we'd use.

As of closing they hadn't got the diff out but am sure they can get a replacement in on Friday. Just in time for my Sunday departure for a 2 week hol.

Apparently no obvious damage to the diff but problem may be with the sun gear, can't tell without dismantling.
MMA have agreed to a new diff, this will be the second one in approx 15k.

No mate just the centre,I'm assured the housing is good.
New one in today so fingers crossed that is the end of it.

Might suggest to MMA that the do some extended warranty, my 5 years runs out in April.
