Update on Challenger

Quick update - link to details and drive of the new challenger

http://www.carpoint.com.au/news/2009/medium-4x4/mitsubishi/challenger/mitsubishi-challenges-the-new-orthodoxy-of-suvs-17599

Good looking vehicle - should pick up all the people who don't want to spend 60k plus on Prados and Pajeros - except for the pissy little 2.5l engine!!!

Looks good but that 5 speed auto chews the juice!
8.3L/100km manual
9.8L/100km auto
Some autos are so good now that they use less fuel than a manual.
Good to see a decent size turbo under the bonnet.

I suppose everyone will be tossing the the new rear coil springs in the bin and fitting after market suspension.

I like the fact that they've put 265/65 tyres on as standard ;)

its 500mm shorter than the triton, I thought it looked short.

it should be a weapon offroad, all the triton good bits BUT better. coil rear, short, and 265 tyres.

hope in 18 months there might be a bigger engine. (I'm a new vehicle whore ATM so undecided)

4wd26 I wouldn't get to excited about the coil rear end mate if it's the old 3 link system from the Paj/ Challenger as it tends to be limited on travel. :(

It can be improved but not easily if you want to keep it legal
Can only hope they've put a 5 link system into it but I doubt it.

That was a good review. The 265's don't seem to affected the fuel consumption with 8.3L/100km from the manual or are the claims in here based on the diameter not the width?
I like this comment at the end.

The new great wall four wheel drives are excellent value for money and in many ways is on the same level as the challanger i think the great its much better value.

Half a metre shorter?

Where has it gone from? I can't see where you could take any length from the ML without stuffing up the best features - even the ML tub is too short so hoping it's not rear passenger room.
I hate to advocate drugs, sex, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.

Had a quick look at a Challenger, rear passenger space is pretty good. Didn't compare to a Triton by going by, hazy, memory the Triton may have had a tiny bit more. Load space is suprisingly long, but pretty narrow.
Probably will stick with getting a Triton in a years time though, better suited for our needs.

I had a look through a Challenger the other day and thought Mitsubishi had just about made the perfect mid sized wagon...and then I saw the Dicso3 style spare tyre winch.

In their supreme lazyness/cheapness Mitsubishi has used the same "internal access" spare tyre winch as in the Discovery3. I assume the wheel brace is used to turn the winch, which is located in the floor of the rear cargo area. If you have the rear fully loaded, it means unpacking most of it. If you decide to fit a set of drawers you will probably have to get a rear bumper spare wheel carrier as there will be no way to access the winch.

They still have the same crappy bash plates as the Triton.

Apart from those two things, I really liked the Challenger.

I like the Challenger. I was having a look at one of these in Malaysia (although it's called a Pajero Sport there). It's proving to be a really good seller which surprised a lot of people. Before this model the Pajero was never really popular in Malaysia but now I've heard it's even outselling the Fortuner. Here's another link from an offroad review.
