MQ Triton in sand

Postby ufc1972 on Fri May 27, 2016 10:10 pm

Hey all. I am about to order a new triton but cannot decide between the GLS and Exceed.
I like a few of the extras in the exceed but most I can live without beside the diff lock. But the GLS is just such great value
I have a PB challenger (very first model) and have always used the diff lock in soft sand as it was the only way I could turn off the stability control. There was a button for traction control but it still left stability control on. Can you turn off the stability control in the GLS. I am sure that you can but just wanted to double check. Also has anyone done much sand driving
and is the lack of a diff lock something that I will really miss. I live right next to fraser island and visit there and rainbow beach fairly often.

Yes sorry it was the TC that did not turn off, that and the fact I would always forget to turn off the ASC so I just got in the habit of turned the diff lock on which turns the other stuff off.

Do you think I will miss the diff lock if I go with the GLS though.
The exceed is working out to be about $5500 more, But a GLS + $5500 spent on extras might be better.

Had no dramas in the sand over West. Drop tyre pressure, turn off traction control and go

You can always get a diff locker later down the track if you think you need it ARB etc, i am deciding between the GLX and tha GLS about 3 or so grand between them here, like the idea of the superselect gearbox in the GLS.

All of them will be good in the sand. I don't think you will miss the difflock in the sand. Tuff choice that only you can make.
Live near Fraser Island that is just not fair :(
How's the fishing in your neck of the woods at the moment?

I normal go spear fishing and it has been pretty good the last few months.
Just hard to get good conditions and the time to get out.
Did a dive a few weeks back at dusk and got about 15kg of mixed fish within about 45 min. It not normally that good but a high tide on dusk in a good spot can really pay off sometimes.

Mitsubishi told me it was too expensive to add a rear locker to a car build but I noticed they have them in other markets like NZ. Down the line I plan to get one of these: https://www.harrop.com.au/shop/4x4-performance/elocker/

I have a GLS and have had it in the sand many times on Bribie. No troubles at all so far.

no issues in my GLS on Fraser other than bash plate took a bashing. Only time I got stopped was at Ngkala Rocks and that was because I was not high enough but got through with our Maxtrax's. I was totally standard including 245/65 tyres. Only had the car less than a couple of weeks before hitting the island :-)

Off to Moreton this Xmas and will get a new bash plate and looking at 265/70 tyres, I've not lifted it at all.

Yes the clearance is not great at all in the new Triton. Maxtrax work so well. I got my first set almost 9 years ago and have be really happy with them. They are faded cracked and old looking now so need a new set.
Finally ordered the Triton today and went with the exceed. I know I didn't really need the diff lock but got an ok deal on an 2015 plate exceed so went with it. I went with the 275 x 65 17 BFG AT and TUFF T01 wheels in black also ordered the ironman rear step with towbar. Will have to wait for a lift kit as I have already over spent. Mrs was not happy with me changing the wheels so better not push my luck.

I have to say I was really surprised how well the triton went on soft sand with the standard tyres and 5 people in the car it was outstanding.

You can turn ASC Stability control off. Traction control remains on except if you activate a factory rear diff lock.

As always lots of useful info and facts in owners handbook.

Had mine recently on Noosa north shore and she went a treat. The sand was soft and very chopped up in places but had no problems at all. However the sump guard does filled up very easily as it is low with the stock suspension.
