Gurgle behind dashboard

Postby jerrah on Thu Dec 29, 2016 11:01 pm

I occasionally notice that after I shut down the engine I briefly hear a whisper quiet gurgle / bubbling noise for a second or two (like an upset stomach) and then it passes. It's happened a number of times over the last 12,000km but only now and then. I think I'd struggle to reproduce it to show someone. I don't think you'd hear it if there was any kind of background noise and I live in an extremely quiet area.

Coolant and oil all look good. It doesn't sound like a boiling engine, temperature gauge has never moved from the middle, no obvious signs of losing coolant...

Thoughts are, air in the heater or some kind of funky air conditioner noise of gas returning.

Does anyone know if the MQ has a special air bleeding procedure? Anyone else noticed any unusual noises on shutdown?

Have noticed the same in both MN and MQ tritons. Not sure what it is, I always put it down to coolant sucking back to the tank.

Can't say I've ever noticed same in my MN.

However, I know that the A/C in Subies will make a similar type of sound when the cooling system has a bit of air trapped in it.

If it's had the coolant changed recently, maybe it's air in the system?

It's an MQ Triton, it hasn't had it's 15,000km service yet so no fluids have been changed since the factory.

Does the position of the heater setting have any impact?

Pretty sure these cars have a heater box with flaps rather than a heater core with variable flow tap. I haven't noticed a difference but then it's difficult to replicate the noise. Being in Queensland I rarely engage the heater.

Is the venting system in these cable or vacuum ? If vacuum then could be the air going out of the vent controllers when engine turned off maybe ?

All done by cables. I checked all the fluids again this morning and they all look within spec.

If no heater tap, maybe the MQ has coolant flowing through the heater core all the time, just like a Subaru... so air in the cooling system from the factory then?

It's new, so don't bother too much troubleshooting it yourself.

Ask your dealer about it and get them to bleed the cooling system anyway... if they can manage it :-)

Low A/C gas charge can make interesting noises as well.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

Could also be the Fuel tank vent/Charcoal canister venting
