Ute Bed Rack

Postby adamh_707 on Mon Feb 20, 2017 9:51 am

Hi All,

I am trying to find some cost effective methods for building a ute bed rack which I would mount a cage/other mounts too.

My MQ is a style side with soft torneau. Something like this, http://www.yakima.com.au/2/Accessories/view/148/BedRock however this sits too low, would prefer is to be about 1/2-1ft higher off the side rails.

Thoughts?

You could fix a roof rack rail or some unistrut along each side of the tub on the inner face of the top edge. Then make up brackets to fit crops bars, which could also be unistrut section. This would give you a fully adjustable frame.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

Would have to look at the engineering for that... would need to be removable.

Might look at some custom fabricators

I have been looking to do the same thing but it seems like there aren't many people who do it, and those who do are expensive. Have a look at these guys..

I found this one in my research.

https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/e ... racks.html - Can get them from Opposite lock. Probably the one I like the most so far, unless I get one fabricated...

Was thinking I could get one fabricated that slides on/off my tub rails (after reinforced) and have it inclosed on the underside by the security door mesh to make it secure, not sure about locking mechs though. Probably not what I need/want but.

I built a rack to hold my rods/poles and rhino rack cage and bushman bag, cost about $60 to build.
I used 30mm angle to sit inside the top of the tub and welded 2 40mm SHS across the top.
To hold it down, i disassembled a door hinge, welded on two threads and used the pin end to grab the lip on the top of the tub. the threads protrude above the SHS where i clamp down a steel strip.

Great idea.

I think that is what I am going to end up doing. Do you mind posting a picture or two?

I ended up going with the unistrut option. Doesn't look the best. I'm thinking of having the bars powder-coated.
photos to follow.
