Convert Triton MR rear to coil springs?

Postby shervo on Sun Jul 12, 2020 10:14 am

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between a stock Pajero Sport or a stock Triton MR pickup. I won't ever tow anything or carry heavy loads, the only load that will ever be in the rear is 50-100kg total load in the back for my camping canopy. So the Triton's leaf springs will always feel very bouncy.

This is probably a very stupid question but do you think replacing the rear suspension in a Triton MR to coil springs (and possibly include changing the shocks?) is worth me looking into? I'd be willing to pay around $4K to have suspension more comfortable when on-road with just my 50-100kg rear load, since that will be my main use-case.

Cheers,
Shervin.

Probably cost more like $10,000- 20,000 to have that engineered, have you thought about parabolic springs instead?

Geez, no wonder I've never heard of anyone do it! I won't bother pursuing that then :-)

I've never heard of parabolic springs (I've never had a ute before), I'll look into it, thanks. I don't mind if the on-road ride isn't as good as a car or wagon, but I want it comfortable enough that with just 50-100kg in the back of the ute I can do 2-4 hour road trips with my 9 year old daughter atleast once per month without her getting too annoyed about the comfort!

You really have a few choices:
1. Replace springs and shocks with something engineered for the ride and load. Someone like Ultimate Suspension can do this. Guesstimate $800-$1000.
2. Replace shocks only. Not really ideal but can soften the ride. Again needs to be specified for load and again Ultimate can help. $400???
3. Put a few bags of sand in the back of the ute. 200kg will do it and the ride will be transformed. ;)
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Thanks Dave & Chris, that's been very helpful, I guess I'll start with heavy things in the back while the car is still under warranty, then when the warranty expires I'll talk to a suspension specialist about making it a softer ride without the added weight :)

Yeah probably a good idea actually. I was hoping to get a Club Cab ute so it has bigger space to put a bed in, but a Pajero Sport already has nice rear coils and better transfer case and just enough space to fit a bed, even if it's less space than a ute. I'm gonna have a rethink ...

Depending on Model of Triton, both it and Pajero Sport use the same Super Select Transfer

Just buy a Navara NP300 mate if you want a coil-sprung ute!

I had a Mq exceed did many a long (6+ hrs) run with it empty and to be honest it was always a comfortable drive. That’s said with a bit of load and it was better so I think you might be surprised. On the other hand I did have a challenger before it and when it was loaded (possibly a bit too much) it became a whole other story and was very noticeable. One of the main reasons I switched to a Ute..

But the Pajero sport is a nice car. I have a mate that has one.
