Front ground clearance

Postby mitzi1 on Tue Sep 29, 2020 7:12 pm

Used search and can't find answer so started a new thread. Can anyone tell me what the ground clearance should be under the engine of an MR GLX+ please?

Having a few problems in the front end. Clearance from low point of sump guard to ground used to be 202mm. It is now around 225m. Wierd. Just wondered what it was supposed to be. Your measurements are taken with the guard off, it appears. The bash plate is higher at the front of the vehicle and is lower at the rear of the engine.which is where I took my measurement.
Cheers.

Sounds like you've hit something and the guard has pushed up.

Could easily have happened somewhere without you noticing.

No mate the sump guard comes in 3 bits I think and all are just fine, bit of dust and dirt from road dirt and rain, but the whole thing is just fine. No damage to the guard at all. It's a change in suspension height it seems.
This is why I asked the question mate, thought someone else may have measured theirs and know the answer.
It's a bit of a problem vehicle.

Nobody measures their suspension height under the sump. Take a measurement, vertically, from the centre of the front wheel hub to the underside of the wheel arch. Post that up and people will be able to make direct comparisons.

I'm not trying to be rude mate, but the thing I was interested in was the ground clearance as the triton has little of it .
To follow your advice though it is 950mm rear and 900mm front using wheel arch height.
Cheers.

I'm not trying to be rude either, but your threads seem to start with cryptic questions. Nothing wrong with being a newbie, we've all been there, but a bit of research should have told you that there is a right and wrong way of measuring suspension/lift height.

At 900mm, your front seems a little low against standard which is around 530mm. Do you have a bullbar or any other heavy accessories, second battery or similar in the front?

Triton suspensions do sag. Mine dropped a similar amount before the first of a series of suspension upgrades.

No accessories mate, stock. The vehicle was bought as a superseded vehicle early this year and although it drove well the front ground clearance under the sump was only 202mm, which seemed low to me. Heard a spring noise like "sproing" from the front end a few weeks ago and when checked it had risen to 225mm. Seems the front end is still too low. When you say they normally sag a bit is it usually by spring sag or strut failure or what please. Appears the sag I have now is similar to your experience before adding accessories.
Cheers

My first guess would be that the noise you heard was the coil reseating itself or maybe some binding happening there. Can't really say without seeing it. A suspension specialist would be able to tell you for sure.

interestingly the top control arm would be past hitting the bump stop, only about maybe 15mm of travel there.

Sounds like the pivot bolts are done up too tight on the suspension arms.

I'd loosen and re-torque them all as a starting point.

point taken mate. But it's good if you know what you're talking about before you go in complaining about a fault or you (Imean me) are going to look pretty silly if you're wrong. This is my ninth 4wd and I came to know a bit about all the others over time but this one is a complete mystery. From the driver's seat it feels and behaves like a car or ute, seating position feels like a car, is low to the ground for a 4wd and a few other things. And yet it is easy to drive as a daily drive and doubles as a 4wd when needed. It's not a dedicated ute or 4wd, but for most people who don't extreme 4wdriving and just want a reliable vehicle that will take a bit of rough stuff if needed on holidays and stuff, it's probably the ideal choice. It just has a few things to be sorted out.
Cheers.
