Desert Fuel Economy

Postby RallyStorm1234 on Tue Jan 12, 2021 7:50 pm

Hi all
Will be heading to Birdsville via the Simpson Desert in June in a 2013 MN 2.5 4 door. Off the people that have done this trip (or similar) I would like to know your fuel economy across the desert. I have an auto that will proberbly be weighing around 2.5 ton. Also were you mainly in 4wd ( high or low) or what percentage of both. Getting good information from this forum for other help.

Ok Thankyou Graham

I completed the Mt Dare to Birdsville crossing in October last year in my 2016 MQ. I used 85 lts in total, but took 135 lts with me.
I was mainly in high range, center locked, but some sections and the larger dunes needed low range.
It was an amazing trip, so much so that I'm going back in April this year to do the Hay River track.

+1 to amachunter's comment
We did the same trip in Oct 2020 and Sept 2021 and went through the exact same amount of fuel. 85L but carried an extra 50L just in case.
2020 was in a MN dual cab
2021 was in a MQ dual cab
