Rats nest

Postby Mickello on Sun Sep 19, 2021 8:33 am

Hi, I found a few leaves, and ratshit, up behind the cabin filter. Removed filter, ordered new one. Cleaned out what I could get to. When I turn on the air vents, it really stinks. Not sure how to check/clean the air system. I’ve laid baits to get any remaining rodents, but even so, it’s really pungent in the cab. I’m dreading summer! Any ideas?

Frigifresh works well. Available from ac parts suppliers.
Local dealership uses it to kill ac smells in used cars.

Only way is to remove the panel above the intake where the wipers are and clean that fully. If it persists then you are going to need to remove the heater entirely and either clean every component thoroughly or replace them.

When contaminants get in the heater they can be a real problem to resolve

Yes.. Its held on by about 6-8 clips and the 2 wiper spindles.

If you have an old vacuum cleaner can you slip a length of garden hose into the nozzle, taping it on so you gain maximum suction and feed the other end down into where all the sh*t is and suck it all out, might even be lucky and pull out the offending rodent 8-)

Make sure your insurance is up to date. Take it deep in the bush & burn it.

A tom cat once pissed on one of my car's windscreens, but that's another story.

If the cabin filter remained intact then no solids should have made it downstream. If you clean the plenum and cavity before the fan, I'd say most of the problem should be dealt with.

I had a bush rat gark it when it got wedged next to the wiper motor. Won't go into extraction details. Main point is future prevention. I used stainless scrubbing pads to fill gaps where the rodent got in around the hinges.

Sure enough, it was behind the front vent panel. Think I got it all out. Will now block off the ends which is where it must have got in. Thanks everyone for the advice. Glad I won’t have to torch the Triton!

I had this a couple of months ago, the car was parked up for a week or so in the backyard.

I just replaced the cabin filter, deodorised the vents and was all good.

It was a mouse and it had started to remove bits of the sound deadening from behind the trim panels and was setting up a nest in the blower motor.

It was still in there when I was cleaning it out and my Border Collie Garry nabbed it when it legged it from somewhere in the engine bay haha :-)

It's amazing where the little shits get into.

Years ago, they'd get into modems on our corporate mainframe network. Apart from pissing and shitting all over the components, they'd change dip switch settings and bring down whole clusters of terminals.

From experience, if you start getting weird, intermittent faults, the presence of rodents is worth checking out.
