Aircon-Blower fan weak after long drive - works on restart

Postby shawty950 on Tue Apr 25, 2023 4:51 pm

Interesting happening this weekend - 500K trip with van each way and happened both legs, aircon works perfectly(cold and blower fan works as normal) till about 3-4 hours into the trip(little kids so stop regularly but keep engine running depending on stop duration toilet or lunch, stop engine for fuel etc). Temps dont go over 103 for water (hills @ 100/110, auto with lockup 67-90 (90 ish uphills unlocked), Cat bank 3 on ultragauge poor mans Exhaust Gas Temp spikes to early 600's(hills)...blower fan speed even on high is weak as the proverbial, and the air temp coming out is not quite warm, but definitely NOT COLD. Stop car for an hour, and the aircon is working as per normal again... on auto at 18C, fan speed blows you away and the air is cold...

2016 MQ from new, never been re-gassed...cabin filter and re-gas were the first 2 thoughts, but then blows you away after a "pause"...so kind of ruled them out atm...

Anyone have any idea's/thoughts?

Before you go down that path of regassing, check both the external and internal A/C temp sensors. Does it do it when on Auto Climate Control, For the fan speed to drop off its like its obtained the required temperature

Hey Wunsie, no difference on auto v Manual(fan speed display 4-5 bars IIRC)...18C on the dial and manually adjust fan speed to max...weak as coming from vents and barely cool temp coming out.
Stop for an hour or so and all golden...blows you away and cold.
Also forgot, temps outside were 21-28C...so not exactly hot...checked dash ambient temp display the last time on the way home and it said 21C outside temp...

I'd be looking for an AC control module and see if it has a cooling fan or heatsink. If these are cladded up, the module would possibly misbehave.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!
