Brake controller - location and wiring

Postby Tritium on Sun Mar 29, 2009 8:18 am

Where is the best or accepted standard position and method to connect the brake wire, Red wire, on a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 to the ML Triton.
Splice into the brake switch wire?
Take it from brake light at rear of vehicle?
Is there a factory connection point?

Regards Craig.

Tritium,
There are 2 wires going to your brake pedal switch.
Check with a multimeter/test light whichever one gives you 12v when you step on the brake is the one you want.
I spliced into this and soldered it. Bit of a pita though as its a fair way up ander the dash :x

Just pulled the plastic cover out and had a look.
Im fairly sure its the blue/red wire but I cant be 100% as I have heat shrink around my soldered joint
Just unclip the white plug from the brake and put a test light/ multimeter in the plug and check. Only 2 wires so if you dont get a reading the first time it has to be the other one.

Nice Job Tritium. Had a look at your higher res photos on the link. I like the way you made a bracket for mounting all the wiring. Looks good. Wish I could work metal........

Has given me some ideas for mine when the time comes. Hey - did the controller come with enough blue wire to run to the towbar, or do you have to source it yourself ?

Unfortunately I don't weld, just fuse things together then grind them back to look like something reasonable. Decided not to put second battery under bonnet but in tub. Wire from controller only long enough to get about 30cm outside of firewall. Joins are hidden in the black cable covering.

I'll get some pics for you ASAP

Mine is located under the steering column- it dosn't get in the way- but then I'm short.
it's in the middle- either side would get in the way- problem is I cannot see the unit whilst driving- but I can reach down to adjust (and manually operate) without taking my eyes off the road.

I got mine professionally installed- so not much help there sorry.

I have mine mounted underneath the steering column on the left side. It fits in fine and although close to my left knee/shin, it does not get in the way and can easily be accessed for adjustment or manual operation. I'll post a photo once I get the car back from it's service.

I mounted my P3 90 degrees in the foot well of of the passenger side, but still within reach. you can see where bg's is above, mine is turned on its side and stuck to the outside of the console, so its a little lower and about 100mm further for the driver to reach.

Have a look at the Redarc it has a remote Switch on it that can be mounted in a standard knock out in the dash, the rest of the gubbins goes anywhere out of the way.

There is another brand that I can't recall that has the same sort of remote head.

unforunately i already purchased the P3! That Redarc looks awesome..... hows it compare to the P3? I have just been given a copy of camper trailer touring no.10 this morning by my brother in law to read. it has a test of all the electric brake controllers in there...will be interesting to see how they rate the P3 in comparison to the Redarc.
any guys from newcastle here recommend an awesome auto lec?

see that gap directly under the audio and scan button!. the rectangular plug in the plastic is where i am aiming for the wires to wander their way through. i have just enough room to operate the 12v outlet and it wont foul the gear selectors. will post up some pics when its done! (by a professional...i dont want a carfloat ever going past me that once was behind!)

Does anyone else's Prodigy P3 say "short circuit to battery" after driving on wet roads? Mine has been doing this for a while now. But its fine during the dry...
