Closing the EGR Valve *check first post for links*

As I already told you , I ve closed the Egr (Exhaust Gas Recycling ) With the Egr the engine is sucking in exhaust gas that has less dense air due to it being hotter,potentially making less power and dirting the all sistem.
Once I ve dismantled the valve I saw what a mess is this system, you guys cant immagine how dirty it was. So I was even more convinced to close it.
I ve cutted and shaped a blank sheet alluminum plate of 1 mm thickness.I was immediately happy when I tried the car , in my opinion I ve gained some more torque at the low Rpm, and in general the car is much more linear.

I did not take any pics , but I will take a pic of the position where to put the plate.
All the work it took 30 minutes.
Is just a day that I ve blocked the EGR , I still have to see in the long run.
But I am also member in a Italian forum for L200 and almost all the members had the EGR blocked, since long time and no problem was reported.

Will go and buy an original gasket and get a new one laser cut that has no hole in the middle.
Is there any need to put any gunk sealer of any type, or is the straight aluminium all that is necessary.

All that is neccessary is just a straight gasket that has no hole in it. I personally kept the original gasket by the side of the engine to prevent any leak of exhaust gas. My mechanic told me that a copper plate is preferable in the long run , because the exhaust gases can oxidize the aluminium.
Copper also is better material for gaskets of any kind because more malleable.
So I will change to copper as soon as possible.

Will i can now report on the good and bad blocking the egr valve.
Its now been 1500km since i fitted the blocking plate and my results
are all bad.
1: Used more fuel gone from 10.3lit to 11.8 per 100km.
2: Engine injectors rattle badly 2200rpm to 3400rpm just like evey morning untill she warms up.
3: Blows more smoke in that rev range, runs like the choke on.

Removed the plate four days ago , rattle all put gone now when warm.
Fuel back to 10.5lit per 100km over the last 524km and a lot less block smoke.
For me if you have the 3.2crd don't block egr off.

yea i also had my EGR vavle closed to a while back,
basicly for emissions reasons, we have our EGR, which basicly recirculates the exhaust gass back up then down the downpipe.
anyways closing the EGR will have u slightly more bottomend power, with about 8=9% added torque with better economy though, and dyno proven to produce less black smoke..from .21 to about .17

just replace the egr gasket-multi gasket with a thicker soild peace, 1.22mm to efficiently close the system.

oh yes and to date i have no problems with my EGR vavle, i have used it for approximatly 7000Km now.
i have run 37000k for the 2007 model....quite a bit huh? and glad to say with my setup i have never had a problem.

beside the front fender comming off hahaha....

For Monster Triton : I also used the car for 10000 Km with the Egr Closed. I am happy to see that you tried and never had a problem.
What other easy mods do you suggest as well?

for what mods where you planning to further do, well it really depends what you are looking for? more power/torque? or better driveability and better reliability???
or a bit of both????

Im bringing this thread up again as i am thinking of closing my EGR valve.

Recently i was telling a highly qualified mechanic friend that i had had the manifold replaced due to carbon build up. without any more said my be he told me it was cos of the new engines using EGR for emission control. and that it should be closed.

Overall it does make sense that why should you put dirty exhaust back into a clean motor?

Am i right in saying that only one person (davoxt) has reported a negative effect of closing the EGR Valve?

I havent even recieved my new tritin yet and am probably going to close the ERG valve, How could the ECU recognise that the valve is closed and log a fault? anyone got a scanner to check. If i make the new gasket that would look identical to the stock one ( Im a fitter and can do so) Would the dealer mechanics be able to tell if i block it at the service intervals. ?

Has anyone taken there ERG blocked triton in for a service while under warranty and the dealer not noticed?

I cant stand the thought of the inlet being full of black shit.... :o

The only thing i think is maybe a possibility is if there is a sensor somewhere to measure the exhaust gas return and if its blocked then there is nothing to measure and it might hiccup?? just a theory

Now looking at the PDF of the engine manual i saw there would be a couple of places where it would be possible to blank off the egr valve, Maybe further up the pipework would be more inconspicuous. What about the valve itself, There might be an easyer way to make it innoperable and remain closed without doing anything like changing the pipe gasket. Im gona look right into this one when i pick up my new truck.

I’ve had my EGR blanked off for a while now and I do have a Smart Gauge which will monitor any engine faults. The engine fault light does comes on and go off every now and then but that was happening before I blanked off the EGR valve and it comes up as a MAP which is a Manifold Air Pressure fault which has something to do with the sensor in the upper manifold. I have a service due soon so I will get that seen to then. I made a blank off plate from the same material that the OME one was made from and you can’t tell the difference.

I blocked mine off at the pipe that goes into the EGR on the manifold and now do have the engine light flick on and off every now and again. I split my gasket in 2 and inserted a 1mm stainless plate between. You can not visually see it fitted.
It's easier to get forgivness than permission.

Just wondering if blocking up this engine crankcase vent causes a pressure build up in the engine?
If so, may it cause other seal related problems.

i agree with these concerns.

monster reckons he just vents his to atmosphere but that seems like a sure way to introduce water and dust in our environments...... :o :o

what about running it through a fuel filter to the atmosphere like we do with diff breathers? obviously this will be easily visible though. from what i knew it was to reintroduce unburnt gases back into the inlet to be reburnt and hence reduce emissions. but are they also a pressure relief system...... where does the EGR return originate from? :?:

can anyone who knows these EGR valve things advise on this topic?
