2012 triton intermittently blowing smoke and losing power

Postby boudka on Wed Aug 14, 2013 8:29 pm

Hi,

I have a 2012 glxr diesel and on 4 occasions in the past fortnight after a trip it will start and blow white smoke and lacks power. I took it into the dealer and they can't fault it saying it didn't do it and logged no codes.

Was wondering if anyone else has had this?

Are you pre-heating the glow plug before you start it? Failure to do that can produce white smoke on start up.

White smoke on a diesel is unburnt fuel. When it is really cold here I glow the plugs twice. If I only do it once I will get white smoke.

Boudka just had my 2012 glxr in for lacking power turned out to be maf sensor the terminals are of a dissimilar metal in the connector and for the sensor, and set about coroding the tech fix was to clean up the terminals and give them a tweak on a bit of an angle and that seemed to help. One issue was smoke so it may be worth while checking this

thought i would post in this thread rather than starting a new one.
I too also have a 2012 mn triton 4spA. its blows huge amounts of smoke whether it be in stop start traffic or highway/ freeway. A little tap on the accelerator and you can see it during the day. at night its even more obvious due to the headlights of the other cars.

it tends to be black smoke. however during start up some mornings i have noticed white smoke. I do also make sure i turn on reds until glowplug lights go off and then start.

Driving the other night i had a mate follow me and asked him what colour the smoke was when it was a small tap and when i floored it. He said it was in between like a grey smoke not white white.

Last couple fills i have started adding 2SO to each tank. I have also added an oil catch can in the last week and after 2 days the filter had already changed colour turned blackish.
I also have the egr mod from tony on order.
Im thinking i def need a manifold clean along with maf sensor clean etc.

Would it help taking to the dealer and asking for a sql.?
i will try and upload pics and also a link to a vid later tonight

I doubt SQL will make much difference.

Light mist of smoke visible through headlights at night is normal on standard tune.

Do all the basics, clean maf sensor, clean map sensor hose and check not blocked, pull EGR valve and inspect for carbon and also look into replacing the SCV.

White smoke on startup is unburnt diesel, test the glow plugs individually.

If issues continue, I would be a bit concerned about the injectors.

Thanks for the reply Tony.

I will go through the basics suggested but it is alot more than a light mist more so like a plume and it doesnt stop until i let the foot off.

I will have to load a video and along with pics when i received back from dealer with balancer issue and I had mentioned to them the smoke and their reply was we did a scan and no faults came up etc.

it has 180k on the clock and i would say i dont think it has had a manifold clean so there would be alot of soot build up.

Its my first diesel so im new to them can do certain things myself and but may also prefer to take it to someone rather than back to the stealership. '
Would you recommend a local mech in sydney (pm if you dont want to list on here)
Ive always been told that the mitsi engines are reliable but also require a fair bit of TLC.

Tritonwreckers, a forum sponsor, can exchange manifolds (already chemically cleaned) and most mechanics won't have trouble doing the rest... swap out. :)

Sydney city? Century motors in Chippendale, just off broadway.. dear but do it right and get back a fixed car. ;) :ugeek:
