Homer runs 275s off a 7 inch rim.

Have they gone back to 7 inches now for the MNs? Mine are 7.5s although a different style to what appears in your shed.

Righto - thanks Ag. So are there any advantages or disadvantages going with a 7" or 8", or does it all just come back to what sizes the rim that you like is made in?

CD - yeah mine are definitely 7" - maybe different width in the glxr?

Yeah maybe that's it. I can't see how 8 inch would be a problem if the GLXRs are being sold stock with 7.5 - it's only 12-13mm after all. I imagine there might be a small price difference. And if you went back to the smaller tyre I'm not sure whether you'd have fitment problems then?

Looks. An 8" rim has a deeper dish and the less of an offset, say 15 over 38 increases that depth so looks better IMHO.
Cost more though

Thanks again Ag. Bitten the bullet and gone with a 16x8 with 25 offset. I'm sure with the tyres I've currently got it will all be fine, and Ive got room to grow should I want to next tyre set.

Yeah - will do. Not sure whether this is the right thread to do that - I'll put it up in my build thread though. Maybe tomorrow if they got shipped out from Adel today.

Ok, so I'm a little confused. I have a 2012 GLR that comes with 245/70R16 tyres (I think) on a 16 x 7" alloy rim with a 38mm positive offset. The outside face of the tyre is about 20mm in from the edge of the flares.

I'm looking at getting a set of Summit Mud Hogs in 265/75R16 on a set of steel rims which are 16 x 8" with a 20mm positive offset. The wheel guys tell me the whole wheel will still be under the mud guard and flares.

By my calcs, the difference in offsets of 18mm plus half the difference in tyre width being 10mm gives me 28mm. Add this to the outside edge of my current tyre (-20mm because its under the flares) would put the outside face of the new tyres at 8mm past the edge of the flares, making it illegal.

Now I know the increased tyre diameter might be considered illegal. Whats really concerns me is that mud from the side of the tyre might get thrown against the body paintwork and damage it.

From all you guys that have this combination of tyre and rim, can you confirm if the wheel guys are telling me the truth, or will the tyre stick out past the flares. Should I be concerned?

Regards

I run a 16x8 steel with +15 offset. It could be argued either way that it is legal or not. +20 will be just inside the guard.
This size offset and 8 inch wide gives a nice deep dish look. As Brodie said, "shithot"

+20 with 7.5" wheels is borderline to the wheel arch moulds but is wider than the mudflaps at the bottom, but not by much.

On an MN you will definitely throw mud/stones up on to the body from the front wheels. Solution is either longer/wider mudflaps or ML style sidesteps or sliders with a step that's covered with chequerplate or similar

Think carefully about steelies. They increase unsprung weight and the greater mass means a detrimental effect on brakes. Some members have reported to the extent where the ABS no longer works properly and braking distances are noticeably longer.

A small warning about the calculation of backspace - the measurement of rim width (ie "16" x 7.5") does NOT take into account of the thickness of the rolled edge of the rim(steel) or buttress thickness (alloy), ie a 7.5" rim is actually 8-8.5" wide when measured across the outside of the rim edge to edge. While not really important in anything but the most extreme circumstances it may be important for clearance to other mechanical/suspension components such as front upper/lower suspension wishbones/anti roll bars etc.

Ask me how I know
