thicker lsd oil.

Postby MitchMN on Sat Jun 21, 2014 8:11 am

Had a bit of a search on here but couldn't find anything, I was wondering if anyone is running a thicker or heavier weight lsd oil to tighten up their diff a little?

What do you mean by "tighten up" Mitch??

Lessen backlash or change the LSD characteristic?

You have a 2013 too, they don't have LSD unless you fitted one yourself???

Yeah 2013 glx definitely has an lsd. And yeah I want to change the characteristics so there is less slip.

You sure? Mine is a 2013 GLX and I was assured by the dealer it had one too before handing over my cash and when it arrived it didn't have one, none did once the traction control was fitted to the GLX apparently. Your diff will have a sticker with LSD written on it near the filler plug if it does have one. Lucky you if you do.

As for oil changing the characteristics, Mitsubishi use a hybrid torsen type LSD so as long as the oil is of the correct type changing viscosity won't "tighten" up it's characteristics unfortunately. Shouldn't need to either, the torsens work awesome as long as both wheels have at least some contact and if you lift a wheel a light application of the handbrake will work perfectly to transfer drive to the wheel with traction. The hybrid part means there should be clutches in there to add some resistance in the event of a wheel lift so you don't need to use the brakes but how well that works I don't know.

Yeah well it apears you guys are correct that there is no lsd, which is a pain in the a@# seeing as it was listed in the specs when I bought the car. Next question is will an lsd from an earlier model fit?

Duck thats eli creek on fraser, I wish we had creeks like that up here our costal ones are 90% mud. The ones up in the mountains are nice though.

Fraz swapped out his MN open diff for an LSD and there were dramas but it can be done. There are different spline counts between MN's and ML's as the MN has a 9" diff the ML a 9.5".
I think one of the axles is shorter as well, maybe :?

Fraz has a very good right up on the process.
I will see if I can find it.
You could also PM him.

Or find an ML diff drum to drum to replace it. As they have a 3.9 ratio as well. Will need to change brake lines and ABS sensors to suit the TC, ASC system though

Yeah that photo I put up was a 3.9 lsd, so that wouldnt just bolt into the mn housing? And then use ml axels?

Garth not all MNs have the different spline counts. See motoz's recent posts on the TJM locker debacle.

Retro fit LSD

I still think the Quaife diff might be worth thinking about.

The Quaife ATB diff is the same as the factory one, being a helical gear torque biasing type. Also same as Harrop trutrac.

Don't people read threads :o I made a link to a Perth company that resells them. $1350 plus bearings and fittings. I contacted them RPM and they are pretty sure they fit but would double check before I ordered one.

If your vehicle was advertised with an LSD and it is also listed on the brochure then per the consumer laws your are entitle to have an LSD, go forth and take up the fight

In the fine print there is some statement that specifications are subject to change without notice.

I wasn't real happy when I found out mine didn't have one, and I asked 2 different salespeople during the purchase.

The other thing that I can't confirm is that the traction control was much more aggressive and actually worked ok for a while but since it's last reflash it does almost nothing at all. Even the ASC has changed in its operation. They never give any info so I have no idea if it has changed or by how much, but I do know it's not the same as it was originally. It would really clamp down on a loss of traction and keep forward movement even if it lifted a front wheel a little before. Now I can just slip the tyres with no intervention at all - weird.
