dont know about you, but when i did my ignition barrel a while back, it took me bloody ages. did not help that i was trying to use a 5mm LED instead of 3mm

And if anyone is interested, im happy to take some pics and show you how to wire up side step illumination so it comes on when the doors are opened, lock/unlock pressed etc. And if you can get a male and female plug of the right size it can be plug and play :D (sorry for hijack  )

Hi all.

Just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me the actual size of the smd leds on the PCB behind the dash as I am looking into changing my white (glx) leds to blue ones as my dvd player, boost gauge & aircon controls are all blue already, and the white looks boring.

Cheers guys.

instrument cluster dial needle(s) removal?

Postby JoanTheSpark on Sat Sep 01, 2012 6:35 pm

I come from a Holden Astra and that one has got a feature I miss on the Triton (GL-R 2.5 DID MN Auto MY10 here) - the instrument cluster is being lit bright by day (perfect visibility even in sunshine) and if you switch on headlights (for dark) it dims down so you don't get dazzled by them.

Now onto the Triton MN - even the brightest cluster light setting is too dark for me by day, so I'd like to check what I can do about it LED wise... the switching between day/night is solvable as I can get to the potentiometer that controls this easily.
The light of the cluster is delivered by SMD LEDs soldered onto the front of the pcb where I can only get to the back currently (the ML cluster picture some posts above doesn't resemble mine).
I got the cluster out but can't for the life of me get the needles of the gauges easily (pulling with some force didn't work, can't see any snap ins or other hold-back mechanics).

So anyone here knows how to get the needles of without destruction?

Shouldn't be too hard to change these over, the pcb just pops out of the clear plastic enclosure so u can play with it... just gotta find the time and the patience... the lights behind all the needles are the same too

Mate can you please tell me if the clear plastic screen on the speedo can be lifted off?..... I've got to get it off to clean in behind it, as its fogged up behind it

can someone give me a guide on how to remove the instrument cluster (speedo) from an mn triton?

i know its likely a simple task but it feels so fiddly i do not want to damage anything trying without some direction.

cheers

Guys I was directed here from the Challenger (PB) forum. I've pulled this thread back up to ask if anyone has swapped out the lights from the instrument cluster. I've searched but not come up with anything more concrete than this thread which doesn't quite get into the subject. It would appear they are PCB mounted in the later clusters so has anyone put new ones in and can tell me what fits. I need to look at changing the red to say blue as the wife can't read the red very well. Being her daily driver I can't really afford the time to pull it apart then source the correct bits, I really need all the bits at hand to tackle the job. If someone can point me to a thread or provide some advice it would be appreciated, the lack of clarity is driving her mad.

I do believe that I may have had something to do with that, fester.

This is the thread that I mentioned/linked. There are photos of the instrument cluster smd leds but, reading through again it doesn't seem that Kyle has actually given specs for them. Assuming that the Challenger instrument cluster pops out the same way, which I believe it does, it wouldn't take that long to remove it enough to identify them so you can purchase before a major dismantle job.

Kyle might jump in here and help more....

I never did end up replacing them, just took photos for reference while I had the dash cluster out... Thought it may help someone out one day. Seemed that you need to replace the board as a whole unless you know how to solder the little smd led off, which looked quite delicate.

I didn't try but it looked like it was possible just with clips surrounding the lens cover. I will need to pull mine out again shortly due to a scuff mark/scratch that has appeared covering part of the spedo range. Dunno how it happened but very annoying!

I mean the black plastic surround to get at the cluster, not the face of the cluster itself.

I thought I'd read somewhere that it is just a straight pull back towards the rear of the vehicle?

Just the curved binnacle over the speedo, not the rest of it.

I'd guess they'd be those little white ones that are sort of wedge shaped.

Keep in mind this is all just from what I've read, I've not had to actually do it yet.

There'll be diagrams in the manual, it's just a shame that Kyle's photos from the start of this thread are gone.
