Hi rain
Any recommendations for a catch can? Does this void warranty?
Cheers

It's not a matter of belief, it's a matter of fact.
Modifications only effect warranty if they cause damage to an original part.

According to consumer protection laws, no.
Warranty can only be voided if a modification causes, or at least contributes to, a failure.
They can't refuse to honour warranty obligations just because the vehicle has been modified.

I think we're caught in a vortex of fact/law/opinion/confusion here.

You can't "void" a warranty with an aftermarket catch can. Equally though just because a law says what MMAL should do, that doesn't mean they're not free to ignore/break/misinterpret the law if they choose to. At which point you're SOL and having to pay lawyers to enforce the law. In the long run you might "win" the battle but you'll have lost the war due to the time and expense involved.

Which brings us back to the old conundrum. Do you choose to do what is best for your engine and try to keep the thing in as good a condition as you possibly can, or, do you leave it in factory condition with the inherent compromises that might involve, on the basis that if it ever dies you don't want to introduce complications to an argument about warranty? Without a crystal ball there is no winning that one, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

If you do decide to go with fitting additional protection, at least do the smart thing and use reputable equipment and not some cheapie alloy number you bought on ebay or ali baba for $15.

and keep the stock bits and just change it back to how it was before you take it in for any warranty issues

So there is a tap on the bottom of the provent catch can or did you put it there yourself?

I have just ordered a provent and the tap is provided by western filters as part of their kit.

Sorry about the late reply guys but i haven't had time to read the forums late as we have just had a baby.

Anyway, i have recently bought another MQ turbo diesel and intalling a catch can is one of the first things i did. The car had about 25kms when i installed the provent catch can and after reading all the posts on this thread and others about oil catch cans, i thought i might make a quick video this afternoon and post it here for you guys. Feel free to share it wherever you want to help other fellow members. My other MQ has 85000kms on the clock and still going strong..

It is a quick crappy video i did myself with my phone, but shows what you need to say. Please check if your video quality is set to 1080p..

Not sure about 500kms but my drain tube fills all the way up to the catch-can every 3000kms. That is when I normally drain it. I'll measure it next time and post it up here. It has nor done nearly 7000kms and let's see how much oil it has captured over the last 4000kms.

Cheers.

Jerrah, it is underneath his car so it must be about 600mm roughly. That is what mine is.

I just had a look at my pipe and tap at the end of pipe and I cannot see any oil in the tube. I would have done 500kms since fitting. It is a bit strange how some have oil and some dont. Are we all fitting it correctly?

Hi ls2cruiser,

At 1000km i see about 10ml of oil.

I also have the EGR side blocked (plate with hole) but don't think that makes a difference to the amount of oil though

Give it a few more km's and see what happens

I fitted a Provent 200 to my MQ on the weekend. I was talking to the in-laws last night and he said he hasn't seen any oil on his older D4D Hilux with the provent after 5000km. Seems a bit odd?

Maybe check the tap isn't open and you're dripping oil constantly? Come to think of it if someone left the tap open your car would potentially vacuum rubbish up that pipe constantly into the turbo!

So far I've gotten about a teaspoon of oil after 2500k's' Don't worry to much you'll get plenty of oil build up in the filter soon enough once the filter becomes saturated' then the oil will begin to trickle down into the collection chamber, then into drain hose we have all installed.

The filter will do it's job give it time ;)

The amount of oil collected would also depend on how the car is driven as high revving and high boost would cause more oil vapour in the crank case becuase of the fanning that is created.Just a thought. We have this problem with all high revving race engines especially with forced induction engines. I tend to sook mine a bit so very little oil so far.
