Camping pods

Postby johno on Sat Jan 14, 2017 7:26 pm

Hi all, I've been searching through a few sheds looking for any "pods"
I know of a few and have been asking a few questions of the few that I have found.
So......my new triton has had the tub removed and replaced with a steel tray with the intention of having a removable pod, set up for camping and then when it's not needed it will be stored and i'll be able to use it as a ute for around the farm.
I know I'm not the first one to do this and others have done some neat improvements to there set ups.
So, I'm hoping that those who already have them might like to share there ideas and experiences with there pods.
I know it will help me and hopefully others that are thinking alone the same line.
At the moment I am waiting for my pod to be delivered from Queensland, as there is no one around me that is set up to make such a thing. There must be a lot of people out there getting them made, a lot of the places that I contacted are flat out with a long waiting time to get an order filled.
When mine arrives I'll add to this post and include a few photos.
So has anyone got anything to add and share ?? :)
Cheers Johno

Gday johno
I went through the process about 18 months ago, removed tub and canopy (fibreglass) had a steel tray made (custom size) and had an alloy canopy made for the tray. It's a removable canopy, 1. so when out camping we can drive tracks (roof top tent fitted), 2. like you said when not out camping you can use your ute.
I had a local fabricator make both the tray and canopy. I did a lot of looking around before hand to see what was out there before having it made.
Best thing i did, it suits the way me and the missus travel, and i get to drive my ute without hauling all my gear around.

thanks for the reply, it looks like a great set up, just what I'm aiming for.
I had a close look at your photos and couldn't quite work out what the little bit on the back is ?? Is it a small door ??

I see you have your fridge in the back, have you had any troubles with condensation ??
And, power wise...did you use an Anderson plug or a trailer plug for the power??

Photo shows whats inside the small door. Fuel cabinet
No issues with condensation.
Used a 50amp anderson plug running 6 gauge (awg) wiring.

Looked a great setup there p'69.

How stiff is the pod standing on its legs? At last years for by show in Melb I had a look at a few options and some seemed a bit wobbly.

Trays looks smart also. How's this compare weight wise to tub?

Rhk
Together with tray and pod fully loaded its on par with the factory tub with fibreglass canopy fully loaded. It may be 30kgs heavier.
When free standing it does wobble when you man handle it, but if you can set it up flat it's not too bad. When climbing into the tent and moving around upstairs you don't notice it. They are a 3 piece leg so there is small movement between pieces. I had the same concerns when starting the build and was looking at using jacking bolts to stop the movement but it really doesn't need it.

I'm in the process of doing this too, my alloy canopy has just started being built.

I'll be following this thread with interest to see what others have done.

Oh good another one! I thought there would be more. 8-)
Will it be a removable pod or will you leave it on ??
Have you started planning what you will do with the inside yet ??

That looks fantastic.

Just a couple of questions.

I'm wondering what the jacks weigh each?

Does the ute bounce around a bit with just the tray after you've removed the pod?

How much extra does the rear ride height change when the pod is removed?

:D

Mine will be a chassis mount.

My head has been spinning with internal fitout ideas... I got a couple of quotes to have the manufacturer and another mob who specialise in 4by fitouts but they are out of my price range so I'll have to do it myself.

At this stage it will have the 50l CFX Waeco on fridge slide on the passenger side and a very basic kitchen/pantry using the Kubeloc Aluminium Extrusions from Ullrich Aluminium for framework and the plastic Oates Storage drawers. Water tank up the front along the front wall and on the drivers side 2 x 100ah AGMs up front and then 2 storage drawers made out of the Kubeloc extrusions. 28l CFX Freezer on top of the storage drawers, LED lights throughout and all the electrical goodies fitted above the water tank on the front wall.

Ha, Ha, Ha  I've been doing exactly the same, It's starting to do my head in.
I've been sorting out containers so that I can use the Kubeloc system..I really like that system, it is so easy to work with and you get a good finished item...I used that for my draw system on the old triton...tip for cutting the aluminium square section, a cheep 40 tooth blade from bunnings and use a drop saw, perfect cut every time 8-)
I take it that your is being made in Qld ? Mine is being finished off on Monday then it will take a week to freight it down to me.
Mine is coming from a mob called MY toolbox in Brendale, they are working from my measurements and lots of photos of my tray. They would of had it finished except that they had 2 guys injure themselves, one guy dropped my pod on his arm and broke it and the other guy dropped a 150mm grinder on his leg (ouch! )
As soon as I get it it's off to the auto sparkie to get a bit of wiring done on the new Triton, so while it's there he can fix up the central locking in the pod, then it will be up to me to work on the inside !! I'm looking forward to the fit out.
I'm a bit like you were with your last big trip...running out of time, we are booked on the ferry to Tassie the first week of March, so I hope I can get it done.
Good luck with your fit out, you will have to let me know how you are going with it.

Legs weigh 12.5 kgs each. As for bouncing around i usually run 28psi in rear tyres empty to absorb some of the road bumps, no excessive bouncing its quite good at those pressures. I spent some time with Brendan at ultimate to sort out laden/unladen ride heights - running their 2 inch comfort lift with a helper spring. I havent measured the actual drop in ride height but as a guess maybe around 50-60mm drop when pod is fitted. Might measure that next time i put it on.

This was a Wonnangatta trip in May this year. It's sooo much better having the removable camping pod and RTT set up. Being able to use the triton without having to pack up is awesome. I also tow a 4.2 qunitrex tinnie around and can now set up and tow/launch the boat etc
I have a few more mods to complete the fit out but this configuration rocks !

Cheers
