ASC issue

Postby ashsut on Fri Oct 05, 2018 8:00 pm

Hey guys,

I searched around the forum a bit and couldn't find anyone with a similar issue on an MQ so here goes:

Had my 2017 GLS MQ since new, 20k on the clock so far.

For a few weeks now the car's ASC (I think) has been cutting in and apply the brakes when travelling around corners (at the speed limit).

My car is permanently loaded for camping/travelling so it is fairly heavy. I've had a Dobinsons 2 inch lift kit installed by my mechanic, in the lift I added 3 leaves from the original suspension to the 2inch lift 550kg spring pack and rides great! The only thing that occurs is some small bouncing after bumps in the road.

There is a bit of weight up high which I am currently trying to reduce but nothing that I thought would affect the cars stability.

Any ideas if the lift kit may have caused this or possibly overloaded? Haven't managed to get to a weigh bridge but I think I'm around the GVM.

Open to any thoughts so let them rip.

Bump

Spoke with a mechanic the other day re this issue and his suggestion was to disconnect it - I said that defeats the propose of having a new/safe car with the feature.

Thoughts?

Have you noticed whether your inputting more or less steering as you go around bends/corners than prior to lift?

The ASC could be concluding a situation in progress by the yaw & steering angle sensors now being out of range.

This is assuming you don't have an underlying fault.

You don't have to disconnect it just turn it off and see if that is really the issue or you may just have a faulty wheel sensor. I'd be looking for another Mechanic if he can't diagnose it.

You could also try it with the box off the roof, it looks top heavy.

So...+550kg plus 3 leaves from the original packs. Should be rated to put under a B Double now.

This is your problem. The suspension is so hard that you're lifting a wheel every time you go around a corner - hence the TC/ASC kicking in to try to correct what it thinks is a skid.

Take the extra leaves out and the problem should go away. Alternately get the car weighed axle by axle and talk to a suspension specialist like Dobinsons or, preferably, Ultimate.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

I don't think the steering has changed since the lift

How would you rectify this problem if you're right?

Funnily enough I took the box off the roof today and went for a good drive around newnes today and I didn't experience the issue across the whole day. The ASC only kicked in under normal conditions off road as you would expect it to.

I emptied the water tanks the other day too. The box had a inflatable kayak that weights about 25kg tops and the annex for the kings tent which would be less than 3kg. The box itself is advertised at 28kg.

I guess 56kgs up that high ain't so good :/

I did think it was a bit excessive but I originally just put the 550kgs in and the car still sagged in the rear, I'll get the car to a weight bridge asap but I think it's still under GVM.

I think going to a suspension pro is a great idea, its just time and money at the moment.

All these new vehicles, with their electrickery, are quite 'sensitive' now. The days of the butch 4x4 are just about over, with the 'grease monkies' being replaced by shrinks.

Think I’m yet to solve this issue completely.

Removing the cargo box and water seemed to improve it but I drove it again over the weekend and it still presented the same issue a few times, I must have been driving easier the previous time.

Going to fill the water up this weekend and see if it makes it worse, then I’ll be looking at some weight reduction I think - no idea where I’ll take/move it from/to that doesn’t take something away or make it a pain in the arse to use.

Open to any suggestions - water storage in particular would be great - the water is for cooking washing and drinking.

Cheers, Ash.
