If the original has done 230k kms why not go oem and it should last that long again

Yep I get that , but sometimes aftermarket is better
For eg

OEM clutch 70,000ks
Aftermarket clutch 150,000ks

Take the turbo to a good, well known turbo shop, and have it overhauled.

There are also some improvements that can be made, which will increase the longevity.

If it ain’t broke then why fix it?

If it were me I’d look at an external gated traditional turbo, not the variable vane type, with this timed to suit would be a weapon.

I do want to get this turbo tested first to see if that is the problem

I have done 223,000K's in a 3.2 diesel. Is an overhaul a normal requirement in this kilometre range and has anyone reported any turbo failures ?

Unless the seals are shot or has excessive shaft play don’t waste your money

Interestingly, the shaft on my son's mn turbo has virtually no play, whereas the unit on my ml has always had a bit of axial play. (mn 210k & ml over 230k).

I put it down to the design of the units. Allowances have to be made for expansion of components as they heat up, etc.

If you can wiggle the compressor vanes against the housing its probably stuffed or due for a rebuild.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!
