Clutch suggestions

Postby macmanluke on Tue Nov 13, 2018 2:01 pm

Hello all

Need to replace the clutch in my brothers MN 2.5 triton as it has started slipping
Fairly mild mods - 32s, 3" exhaust and an ecu remap.

Looking around the most popular options seem to be:
Outback extreme
4Terrain
Excedy safari

any suggestions or recommendations?

I run an NPC in my cruiser but they are a rather expensive option.

Any one know how much a replacement OEM fly wheel is worth?
(makes doing the job in a single day easier and less likely to have issues)

thanks!

Unless the flywheel is badly damaged I would just get it remachined.

Maybe a clutch supplier could do an exchange?
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

If it's feral, it's in peril.

MN turbo lag? What lag??

99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

When C day comes, I'm leaning towards having the flywheel on hand.

Let's you do the job with minimum down time, dimensions should be spot on and you have a fresh ring gear.

The old flywheel can be either flogged off or re-machined for the next time.

yea thats my thought too

When i did mine in my cruiser it came with a billet flywheel which allowed me to get it all done over a weekend.

Had the xtreme outback installed in my mn back in January. No complaints so far and no issues reversing the camper trailer up my very steep driveway. Nice pedal feel too.

I've got the 4Terrain Safari in mine.

It's been really good, apart from an issue where I filled my bellhousing with liquid clay, causing it to slip for a couple of weeks until I realised, and washed it out.

Clutches apparently don't like dry, finely-ground clay powder, especially when it's packed tightly into the bellhousing

The 32" tyres and the remap aren't kind to a clutch which is already barely adequate for a stock vehicle.

You will be shocked at the cost of a new 4WD flywheel

I bought a new 2WD flywheel (got 3 in a job lot), and had it machined to suit the 4WD clutch. The 2WD one is much heavier, and translates to a lot more inertia offroad, and smoother on the highway.

Gee....never thought they'd bother having two different sizes on the same engine. I was under the impression my biggest worry was choosing between single and dual mass units.

So how much has to be done to the 2wd to make it work Bill?

Does this apply to the 3.2?

The 2WD one is single mass, and much thicker.

I just gave the 4WD one and the 2WD one to a local machine shop, and said "make it so". And they did.
Improves the "drivability" at low speed off road, and on freeway cruising.

I don't know anything about the 3.2 flywheel.

Not long since i did my clutch change. I choose the Excedy sports tuff. Turned out to be excellent choice. My main concern was pedal feel as an old clubsport i had, the mrs struggled to push in the clutch with her chicken leg.

Its a rather big job doing it on your own and on your back. So i planned for it over 2 days. That way it accomdates machining the flywheel. First day I removed box, clutch and flywheel. Degreased bellhousing. Removed and installed new pilot bearing and thrust bearing then broke for the night.
Next day first thing, drove into town and dropped off flywheel. Went had breakfast while i waited then picked it up and drove home to finish off the job. Done by lunchtime.

What i liked most about doing it this way was that it forced me to pull up at a certain stage. Usually i flog myself until the job is done.
But to answer your questiin, i am so glad i went Excedy. Nearly was swayed by the other brands. I also run chip w 22 psi boost, 32 tyres, dual diff locks. It loves bouncy my camp trailer over the sand dunes, the clutch loves it.

How are people's replacement clutches going?

Zooming up towards 240k, my clutch seems to be nearing its retirement as a light touch of the pedal will have it slipping.

Do the clutch kits with flywheel listed for Pajeros also fit the ml 3.2 triton?
