I'm been getting 8km/l (12.5 l per 100km) regularly at 100kmh highway driving (that's 600km from full tank).
The car was suffering severe loss of power which was fixed under warrant with new fuel pump and suction control valve.
However the poor fuel economy remains.
Can anyone recommend a Triton mechanic that can resolve this issue?

I forgot to mention that I'm in Melbourne. So I'm looking for a Triton guru in Melb.
Also the 12.5 l per 100km highway cycle at 100kmh is the best achieved. Triton has standard 16” Duellers and a steel canopy with 125,000km. I've done exactly the same trips in a Nissan Navara D40 ST Dual Cab 5sp auto 4x4 2.5DT with 145,000Km, which I believe is the same engine as the Triton, and the Navara returned 9l per 100Km.
So I thought the difference in consumption was mostly due to the old 4sp vs the modern 5sp auto.
I'm starting to wonder whether the Triton fuel specs were ever achievable??

Similar specification, but not the same engine

When my MN was stock as a rock i get 8.5 consistently. These small engines suffer when you start adding weight. The MN's aerodynamics seem to be pretty well sorted in stock form also, so as soon as you add anything that changes the air drag on the car, the fuel economy starts to climb.

What modification do you have on the car JumBuk?

The MN is standard (single cab chassis). But it has an aftermarket steel canopy (previous owner) which is higher than the cabin with square edges so I presume that creates a bit of drag.

You may be surprised how much the canopy affects your economy. I put a roof cage off a 100 series on my MN, and lost 100km of range from a tank straight away. The other thing i found that sucked my fuel was heavier tyres and rims. the size increase contributed a little but i found the heavier combination of the steelies and the LT muddies, ended up cutting atleast 80km of range.

So in my instance, when my car was stock i got roughly 820km (8.53l/100), and as soon as i changed the tyres and put a rack on i was down too 640km (10.93l/100), i then added more weight and drag, bullbar, sliders, bashplates, winch, driving lights, roof top tent, now i get 500 if im lucky, or 14l/100  .

It all counts in the end. If possible, try taking the canopy off, and do a few tanks without it, you may be surprised by the difference.

Thanks for the info Maxiy
Unfortunately the canopy is fixed but I think that could be the culprit. I did tow a 16ft pop top caravan once with a Navara over the same trip as the Triton and that returned 12.5l/100km and without the c/van it was 9l. The Navara had the same spec engine but was 5sp. Not quite the same comparison but the canopy is quite heavy and wider and taller than the cabin.

My mn 2010 glr has front and rear bars, winch, canopy, roof racks, awning, loaded drawers and fridge, and is the 4 speed auto and my economy is same city or highway driving, best I got was 12.6 averaging around 13lph.
I think it's to high but maybe not after reading this thread

2014 MN 4sp auto 45000km. Best 7.8/100km, worst 14.0, combined 11.1. Can't complain, but wish I had bought a manual.

2014 GLX-R manual, 180k kms with alloy bullbar, spotties, hardlid with sports bars, long range tank & standard size ATRs I'm getting mid to high 6s per 100km on the highway or with the roof top tent & loaded with fridge & camping gear its mid 8s. These figures are off the trip computer though so I'm not sure how accurate it really is.

Hi first post ! 2013 manual, 168,000 ks, my fuel light comes on at about 725ks every tank and I put about 65 litres in every time. I drive pretty carefully, to and from work in the southern highlands, so not much start and stop -

I just recently got rid of my canopy and immediately got 1 to 2l/100km better economy. I have a feeling it is not the weight, but the drag from the design. I've had half a tonne of wood in the back and economy wasn't affected much so my t theory is the way canopy curves forward acts as a scoop. Perhaps that's why the big difference. Anyway, now she's naked, my baby gets 11.5L/100km in commuting conditions in Canberra. Much better than 13-14. :D

Getting the valve clearances back in spec has produced a significant boost in fuel economy.

I remember watching something years ago, i think it may have been on mythbusters. But apparently the having an open tub is better aerodynamics, something about creating a ball of air in the front of the tub, which in turn directs air moving over the roof backwards (im no engineer as you can tell).

From what I've read, a bunch of vortex generators around the back edge of a canopy could cut a bit of drag.

Triton GLX 2012 4WD, 2.5lt turbo diesel, 5 speed manual with 150,000Km.
Stock standard (not for long…) with fiberglass canopy. Lived all of its life in the city.
I travel 75km each way to work over 2 mountains. I was averaging 9.2lt/100km.

I replaced the air filter with a K& N oiled filter and have new Yokohama GEOLANDAR AT G015 tyres.
I fuel up about every 550km or so. After 2000km+ I am now getting 8.8lt/100km.
I guess the small things matter.

Fuel economy

Postby dylpickles101 on Wed Dec 02, 2020 8:01 am

hello,

i currently own a 2012 MN triton gl-r 4x4 and have noticed it is quite poor on fuel. im getting about 17L/100km even on longer trips. Ive only got a Light bullbar installed and no heavy accessories.

ive read they should be getting around 9.9L/100km.

Anyone suggest a reason for this or any tips to improve?

Thanks,

Dylan

Economy readout really improves when you hook up a chip.

All the inputs get fudged and the result shows.

On the plus, when calculating off corrected Odometer and Bowser, economy does improve, just not as much as indicated.
