4wd not engaging, light flickers on and off

Hey guys,

I have recently bought a 2007 ML Triton, engaging 4wd has the 4wd light flicker and not engage properly, i've read online that it could be a few different things (Vaccum pump, selector switch on the gear box, hose lines, solonoid), my question is, would it be a better idea to go through mitsubishi for the repair or try and find a aftermarket upgrade to help prevent it from happening again? has anyone had this issue? if so what did you find worked the best?
